Enhancing Accessibility: GNOME 46.7 Revamps Keyboard Backlight Toggle in Quick Settings

The GNOME Project has released GNOME 46.7, which serves as the seventh maintenance update for the GNOME 46 “Kathmandu” desktop environment series. This update addresses various bugs and includes updated translations.

Key improvements in GNOME 46.7 include enhanced accessibility for the keyboard backlight toggle in Quick Settings, ensuring that systems default to GPUs with built-in panels connected as the primary GPU, and changing the Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) thread’s default priority from real-time to high.

The update also tackles a number of graphical issues: it guarantees frame events for cursor surfaces, allows BGRX8888 format on Big Endian systems, rectifies graphical artifacts seen in partially-rounded buttons in GNOME Shell, and resolves cursor glitches during the use of virtual monitors as well as issues related to immediate cursor updates post window drag.

Moreover, GNOME Initial Setup has been improved with version 46.7, which now features an enhanced timezone page that removes duplicate entries for certain cities and includes support for GTK 4.17 to prevent startup crashes.

GNOME Online Accounts has been updated to version 3.50.7, fixing a deadlock problem with canceled tasks, while libsoup is at version 3.4.5, addressing several issues regarding NULL dereference, overflow, and assertions. Additionally, gnome-user-docs 46.7 brings updated translations.

For full details, along with the complete changelog, you can visit the announcement page. It is advisable for users still on GNOME 46 to update to version 46.7 as soon as it is available in their distribution’s repositories.

However, users are highly encouraged to upgrade to the newer GNOME 47 series, particularly version 47.2, which was released recently. The GNOME 46 series will continue receiving maintenance updates until March 2025, when it reaches end of life (EOL) and is succeeded by GNOME 48, slated for release on March 19, 2025.

GNOME 46.5 Launches: Enhanced Mutter and GNOME Shell Enhancements Highlight Latest Release

The GNOME Project today announced the release of GNOME 46.5, marking the fifth maintenance release of the GNOME 46 “Kathmandu” desktop environment series. This update continues to resolve bugs and enhance performance.

Arriving five weeks following the release of GNOME 46.4, version 46.5 introduces refinements such as smartcard login capabilities, controlled user permissions on new Wi-Fi connections for restricted profiles, the display of pending PAM messages at login, and the functional consistency of the “Locate Pointer” feature with the “Reduce Animation” setting active.

Additionally, this update remedies multiple issues found in the Mutter window and composite manager. It corrects functionalities like drag and drop interactions between X11 and Wayland clients, drag and drop from active pop-ups, EGLDevice support, and the appearance of a frozen cursor on certain hybrid machines. Problems regarding tablet input on maximized windows, cursor freezing post-suspend, modifiers on multi-GPU systems, tablet device disconnections, and window dragging with pointer lock are also addressed.

The GNOME Software application itself moves to version 46.5, focusing on minimizing energy consumption once the main window is closed. The inclusion of gnome-autoar 0.4.5 supports the handling of bzip2 tarballs, now showing proper support within Nautilus, enhancing user experience with archived files.

The Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser has recently been upgraded to version 46.4. This update rolls back changes made to key event handling due to issues with non-Latin keyboards, eliminates the tab overview shortcut in Web Apps, addresses errors in the icon URL during the Install Web Application process, and resolves crashes in tab overview mode when no tabs are open.

In related updates, GNOME’s GVfs, a userspace virtual filesystem, has advanced to version 1.54.3. This version brings enhancements to OneDrive support, including the management of multiple drives sharing identical IDs, local detection of MIME types when not specified by the server, and improved naming capabilities for the root of the drive.

Furthermore, the release of GNOME 46.5 includes libadwaita version 1.5.4, which introduces support for updated GPL-2/3.0-only SPDX IDs. It also corrects issues such as the back button menu detecting phantom pages, prevents two types of crashes associated with drag and drop, and fixes scroll undershoot issues in dropdown menus and the emoji picker.

Last but not least, GNOME Online Accounts received a quick fix for auto-detection of Yahoo accounts along with enhancements to the gnome-desktop components, which now boast improved compatibility with muslc. Added are updated default Indic input methods, and support for ibus-chewing as the default input source for Traditional Chinese (zh_TW) localization.

This release also includes updated versions of the GNOME Disk Utility (Disks), version 46.1, and GNOME Remote Desktop, version 46.5, which primarily feature updated translations. Additional updates cover core components like GLib 2.80.5, GTK 4.14.5, libgweather 4.4.4, and librsvg 2.58.4.

Check out the release announcement page for all the details about the changes implemented in GNOME 46.5, a version that may already be available in the stable software repositories of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution. If you’re using GNOME 46, updating your installations as soon as possible is recommended.

GNOME 46.4 Update Enhances WPA2 Enterprise Network Connectivity

The GNOME Project announced the release of GNOME 46.4 today, marking the fourth update in the GNOME 46 “Kathmandu” desktop environment series. This update includes a range of improvements, bug fixes, and updated translations.

Arriving one month after GNOME 46.3, version 46.4 enhances connectivity to WPA2 enterprise networks, addresses glitches in the looking-glass effect, updates the Persian on-screen keyboard layout, improves the overview startup notification and keyboard navigation in app folders, as well as nested popovers on Wayland.

The GNOME Control Center, also updated to version 46.4, brings minor fixes across various settings panels including Accessibility, Apps, Network, Privacy, Users, and WWAN. Additionally, the GNOME Remote Desktop has been updated to the same version to appropriately manage invalid x224Crq data and correct a file descriptor leak.

Epiphany, the GNOME Web browser version 46.3, now disables Firefox Sync, ensures that new windows open as non-incognito by default, refines the application mode when “always start in incognito mode” is activated, and resolves several crashes.

Evince 46.3.1 document viewer is now part of this release, featuring advanced detection of non-seekable files and adjustments to avoid loading those files directly. Additionally, the GNOME Music 46.1 music player is updated with enhanced search capabilities, better handling of incorrect image formats, and various other corrections.

GNOME Software 46.4 addresses issues with formatting when incorporating “<code>” tags in AppStream metadata. GNOME Online Accounts 3.50.4 now facilitates editing details for Exchange accounts during re-authentication processes and ensures proper saving and resetting of settings for TLS certificate errors. GNOME Bluetooth 46.1 includes a fix for a previously identified issue with broken device icons.

Additionally, the inclusion of GNOME Builder 46.3 brings features such as ignoring the Codespell plugin when spellchecking is disabled, restoring focus to the editor post-document formatting, integrating Swift-format plugin to leverage the build pipeline for SDK tooling identification, enabling Terminal to verify ctrl mask for ctrl+click to open links, and enhancements to both Clang-format and Xml-pack plugins.

Visit the release announcement page to discover all the new features and updates in GNOME 46.4. This version is now accessible in the stable repositories of various GNU/Linux distributions. If you are a GNOME 46 user, it’s recommended to update your system promptly.

Latest Release: GNOME 46.1 Desktop Environment with Enhanced Sync Support

The GNOME Project announced today the availability of GNOME 46.1, the first minor increment of the most recent GNOME 46 “Kathmandu” desktop environment series, offering various enhancements and fixes.

Coming a month after the launch of GNOME 46, GNOME 46.1 introduces explicit GNU synchronization functionality for NVIDIA hardware users on Wayland, aiming to boost performance and rectify various graphical anomalies. This was implemented in the Mutter window and composite manager.

Nevertheless, a new NVIDIA proprietary graphics driver release that incorporates explicit synchronization is still to be waited for. Conversely, Mutter 46.1 also enhances support for hybrid graphics, rectifying several secondary GPU acceleration problems with the NVIDIA graphics driver, and rectifying input lag seen on X11 with NVIDIA hardware.

Additionally, Mutter 46.1 improves the Night Light feature for displays lacking EDID, increases support for certain Xwayland clients, corrects the initial suspended state, and resolves a suite of other errors and crashes.

GNOME Shell has been updated as well in GNOME 46.1 to improve the notification of conflicting sessions, add a shift level to the Korean on-screen keyboard layout, fix markup support in notifications, address a couple of issues in the Extensions app, and also fix some smaller bugs.

GNOME’s Nautilus (Files) file manager received fixes for some bugs as well to enable users to create archives with the Enter key on the “Compress” dialog, correctly move the focus when an item is removed, and optimize the overall view performance.

Moreover, Nautilus 46.1 prevents a crash when compressing a file and a folder, no longer shows banners in global search, preserves permissions when copying from read-only filesystems, and disables non-working global search from the “Other Locations” view.

Other than that, GNOME 46.1 updates the GNOME Maps app to fix an issue with the current location marker not moving when updating the location, as well as the GNOME Text Editor app to remove the DBusActicatable=true parameter from the .desktop file, which fixes an issue where you could spawn Text Editor via D-Bus and not have the session restored at startup.

The Orca 46.1 screen reader is included as well in this release with fixes for an issue that caused flat review clicking to fail in some GTK apps, a regression in the SayAll during page load, a crash in Pidgin IM, a hang when “where am I” was used immediately after loading the pages of a large document, and presentation of new radio button groups.

Last but not least, the Loupe image viewer has been updated to version 46.2, a release that fixes the fill-space option not being applied when changing the orientation in Print Preview, an issue that prevented PNG images from being displayed when browsing SMB shares, blurry fractional scaling, an issue that prevented exposure times above 0.5 seconds from being displayed correctly in the Properties dialog, and an issue where the page orientation from the Print Preview dialog wasn’t honored for the actual print.

Updates have been introduced to the GNOME Control Center 46.1 in numerous panels. In the Network Panel, support for cloned-mac with stable-ssid has been included. The Privacy panel has seen a resolution for Help pages issues during Privacy settings navigation. The Sharing panel will now automatically be hidden in the absence of Rygel and gnome-user-share while the Wacom panel now checks for the correct output connector name.

The System panel has undergone improvements in generated passwords for Remote Desktop settings. It will no longer display the auto-timezone setting when location services cannot be found. In the Display panel, a crash that was triggered while pressing the Esc key in the display settings has been fixed. There are also improvements in the accessibility of “Typing” settings sliders in the Accessibility panel.

In GNOME 46.1, additional updates include the GNOME Remote Desktop server running on Big Endian and prevention of a crash in case there are no user sessions. Similarly, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome has also received various fixes for the ScreenCast portal dialog. For an extensive insight into these changes, refer to the release announcement page.

GNOME 46.1 will soon make its way into the stable software repositories of your favorite GNU/Linux distributions, particularly if you’re using rolling-release distros like Arch Linux or openSUSE Tumbleweed, ensuring that your installations stay up to date is essential if you use the latest GNOME 46 desktop environment series.

Introducing GNOME 46 “Kathmandu”: Check Out the Latest Features and Updates

The GNOME Project has unveiled GNOME 46, a significant new iteration of their well-liked desktop environment for GNU/Linux systems. This version comes packed with fresh features, enhancements, software updates, and more.

Entitled “Kathmandu,” after the hosting destination of the GNOME.Asia 2023  summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, the GNOME 46 desktop environment brings forth crucial new features such as headless remote desktop functionality facilitating connections to your GNOME system remotely without a pre-existing session.

When accessing your GNOME desktop from a remote location, you can modify the display from the remote client and employ the system as an entirely operational remote resource. Nevertheless, a local session should not be active during a remote desktop session.

Albeit labeled as experimental (requiring manual activation), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support constitutes another significant addition in GNOME 46. This feature will enable you to alter your monitor’s variable refresh rate via the GNOME Settings application in the Display section. Nonetheless, this will only be compatible with monitors that endorse variable refresh rates.

Talking about GNOME Settings, the GNOME 46 release brings a new System panel that incorporates the Region & Language, Date & Time, Users, Remote Desktop, and About panels, as well as new Secure Shell settings.

The GNOME Settings app also comes with a new Apps panel that incorporates the Removable Media and Default Apps settings, a new Privacy & Security panel that replaces the previous Privacy panel, a new option to disable the touchpad while typing, a new “Secondary Click” option for touchpads, as well as integrated search functionality.

There’s also a revamped Wi-Fi page to show the password when sharing the network via QR Code, a revamped Wacom page to highlight the currently active stylus, offer more fine-grained control over stylus pressure, and pair only built-in pads with tablets, and an improved Network page that now shows the details page when creating new VPN or wired connections.

Online Accounts, which is integrated into GNOME Settings, now offers CardDav and CalDav providers, OneDrive support, and web browser-based authentication, which is more secure. Also, Online Accounts is no longer included as part of the initial setup.

GNOME 46 also updates the Nautilus (Files) file manager with major changes like a new global search feature, file operations indicator at the bottom of the sidebar, smoother transition when switching between grid and list views without reloading, improved discoverability of custom folder icons, and support for star emblems in the grid view.

Moreover, Nautilus now allows searching for preferences, offers a detailed date and time format option, includes the contents of markdown files in full-text search results, adds a password confirmation field in the compress dialog, and warns you before copying/moving a file that’s over the 4GB limit on FAT systems.

Nautilus now also uses toasts to provide feedback for some quick file operations, has a new menu item to switch the address bar to the location entry, which is now opened when the current path is clicked, and has an improved narrow mode where the sidebar is now closed when a location is selected from it.

The GNOME Software app store/package manager has been updated as well in GNOME 46 with support for verified Flatpak apps, redesigned update preferences, a refreshed UI design with modern widgets and prettier “Loading app details” status pages, a new keyboard shortcuts window, and support for user installation of local .flatpak files.

GNOME Software will also now let you adjust how apps with read/write Pipewire access are presented and updates the safety window to show if Flatpak apps are using the device=input permission, which is primarily used for game controllers.

The GNOME Maps app now supports public transit routing with OpenTripPlanner v2 via GraphQL, which is currently enabled only for Norway’s national Entur API provider, and offers a modernized setup UI for OpenStreetMap POI editing.

Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser now supports PKCS #11 smart card authentication and closing behavior for pinned tabs, improves Firefox Sync support when GNOME Keyring isn’t installed, removes Google Safe Browsing support, and reduces adblock filter update interval on metered connections.

The Loupe image viewer app now uses Glycin 1.0 for enhanced protection against security exploits in image loaders, a new pinch gesture on touchpads (Ctrl + two-finger up/down), and a better experience on large screens by reducing the use of animations.

GNOME Calculator was updated with features that enable substring search in the unit selection drop-down menus, addition of Argentine Peso as a supported currency, introduction of troy ounce (ozt) as a new measurement unit, and a feature that reloads conversion rates in case of search-provider conversion failure.

GNOME Tweaks was upgraded to support search of shell themes in the default gnome-shell theme directory, accelerated profile selection for touchpads, and a dark style background in Appearance settings. However, the audio overamplification and “Disable Touchpad While Typing” options are no longer available.

GNOME Initial Setup saw enhancements in avatar generation and in the Welcome page. GNOME Text Editor now scans for files on the disk before reloading drafts to prevent showing deleted files. The editor is now displayed by default on the Dash. GNOME Connections was updated to verify certificates for RDP, offer support for domains, and include a better onboarding text.

GNOME Chess, the game, has been made more user-friendly with feature updates – highlighting pieces of concern when the king is in check, a new keyboard shortcut for reviewing previous/next moves, HIG (Human Interface Guidelines) compatible tooltips, a better style for message dialogues, updates to the main menu, and enhanced shortcut names in the help overlay.

On top of all that, GNOME 46 also brings performance improvements to GNOME Shell, screen recording, file system handling (especially when deleting a folder with a lot of files), memory usage in Tracker, the High Contrast mode, as well as the Mutter window and composite manager., which now has reduced dependencies.

More apps have been ported to GTK4, including the GNOME System Monitor, Swell Foop, and GNOME Tweaks. Also, there’s a new terminal emulator app called Prompt and a new offline documentation app called Biblioteca, as part of the GNOME Circle ecosystem.

Other noteworthy changes in GNOME 46 include improved notifications, which can now be expanded from the notification list to access their actions, an improved on-screen keyboard, new shortcuts for launching apps, built-in support for WebP images, nicer transition when exiting search results, a redesigned Extensions app, quick timers in the Clocks app, a prettier multi-monitor keyboard shortcut pop-up, support for monitoring disk usage, and JPEG-XL as the default format for backgrounds.

Notifications in GNOME 46

Check out the release notes for extra reading and the official release video below. GNOME 46 will make its way into the stable software repositories of various popular GNU/Linux distributions in the coming weeks. Major Linux distribution releases that will come with GNOME 46 by default include Fedora Linux 40 and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS in late April 2024.

Latest Update: GNOME 46 Release Candidate Now Available with Final Tweaks

The GNOME Project announced today the availability of the Release Candidate (RC) milestone of the upcoming GNOME 46 desktop environment series, due out later this month, for public testing.

The GNOME 46 RC (Release Candidate) milestone is here with one last set of changes for the final release on March 20th. Probably the biggest change is the long-awaited variable refresh rate (VRR) feature (even if it will be an experimental feature that users need to manually enable).

As for the Settings (GNOME Control Center), the Release Candidate introduces a new “Add Enterprise User” dialog on the Users page, as well as new “Remote Login” settings on the System page. Additionally, the “Remote Desktop” settings have been renamed to “Desktop Sharing” and it’s now possible to launch some subpages from the command line.

The improvemnts in the Release Candidate include the use of H.264 encoding for the screencasting feature, if available, and the implementation of modifier-aware screencasting support. It also improves the NetworkManager‘s WireGuard support, adds support for locking down extension installation for system integrators, provides the ability to inform users about conflicting local/remote sessions on login, and enhances the on-screen keyboard.

The Nautilus (Files) file manager received a number of updates, including improved positioning of loop mounts in the sidebars, enhanced internationalization, and performance optimization for multi-file properties.

The GNOME Connections application has now introduced support for the FreerRDP 3 protocol. It also showcases improved scrolling for touchpads and smoother scroll events. The GNOME Display Manager (GDM) has been updated and now employs Wayland as default on certain server chips and has the capability to terminate conflicting sessions at login. Furthermore, gnome-remote-desktop has ceased using DMA buffer support with NVIDIA.

In addition to this, GNOME Maps has seen a surge of updates to its map style. GNOME Clocks now displays a toast when a new alarm is set and disables an alarm once it’s rung once, if it isn’t set to repeat itself. Lastly, Swell Foop, the game, has been enhanced for score handling and keyboard-only gameplay, and it now presents the high score goal on the Game Over screen.

The Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser now closes the page menu popover on print, search, and full-screen actions and focuses the location entry when using the Ctrl+K keyboard shortcut to activate the address bar’s default search engine.

Also, the GNOME Text Editor app now disables editing while a document is loading and discards documents that are still loading when saving a session, the GNOME Software app improves the launching of some apps, the GNOME Console terminal emulator now remembers if the window was maximized or not when restoring window dimensions, and the Orca screen reader received support for the new Spiel speech synthesis API.

Apps like GNOME System Monitor, GNOME Calculator, Lightsoff, Loupe, Tecla, and GNOME Sudoku received various small fixes and updated translations. For more details, check out the changelog on the release announcement page, from where you can also download the GNOME 46 RC installation image if you want to give it a try.

As mentioned before, the final release of the GNOME 46 desktop environment is expected on March 20th, 2024. However, unlike KDE Plasma 6, we will have to wait a couple of weeks or even more to enjoy its new features and enhancements until distro maintainers manage to update their GNOME offerings to the new release.

Public Beta Testing Launches for GNOME 46 Desktop Environment

The beta version of the forthcoming GNOME 46 desktop environment series has been released by The GNOME Project for public testing. This release, which is set to be officially launched on 20th March 2024, showcases a number of new additions and upgrades across its key elements and applications.

Particular highlights of the GNOME 46 beta include a variety of enhancements to the GNOME Shell and Mutter, many of which are discussed in detail here. Also added is a dedicated Global Search mode for the Nautilus (Files) file manager, which can be explored further here. Furthermore, an upgrade plugin for the openSUSE Leap distribution in GNOME Software has been incorporated, along with PKCS #11 smart card authentication support, specific closing behaviour for pinned tabs in Epiphany (GNOME Web), and a GTK4 port of GNOME Tweaks.

GNOME 46 beta also reveals a modernized properties dialogue for GNOME Bluetooth, the feature to record difficulty levels in GNOME Sudoku, a Preferences dialogue for GNOME Music, drop shadow support for unique file property dialogue icons in Nautilus. There is also a Microsoft 365 provider and GTK4 port for GNOME Online Accounts, as well as a refined default background that utilises minimum lens distortion.

The GNOME Control Center (Settings) also gains upgrades, especially to the Wi-Fi page which now reveals the password when a network is shared via QR Code. Enhancements to the Wacom page now spotlight the currently operative stylus, prioritize the stylus over the eraser, and pair only fixed pads with tablets. Another improvement includes a modernized mouse test dialogue on the Mouse page.

Moreover, the Privacy page now hides the non-functional microphone panel, the Search page received a command-line parameter for opening the Search Locations dialog directly, and the Network panel now features missing VPN entries.

GNOME Settings in GNOME 46 Beta with integrated search and ported to GTK4.

During the alpha phase, the GNOME Settings app was streamlined with better-reorganized settings by relevance, a new System panel that groups the Region & Language, Date & Time, Users, Remote Desktop, and About panels, as well as new Secure Shell settings, a new Apps panel that also houses the Default Apps settings, and a new Privacy & Security panel that’s a bit different than the previous Privacy panel.

GNOME Settings 46 was not available during the GNOME 46 alpha release, therefore, I have provided some screenshots of the reorganized settings and new panels for your perusal.

The Loupe image viewer has a new keyboard shortcut for permanently deleting an image (Shift+Delete), a button for copying location coordinates in image properties, support for opening images in new windows for wider screen occupancy (40% vs 30%), and the functionality to display the city name if the image’s location is less than 15km instead of 100km away.

Additionally, Loupe has a new build option that allows system integrators to compile the app with an optional X11 dependency. It also supports the use of “stacked cards” animation when changing images through buttons, as well as the option for users to disable animations when changing images using keyboard shortcuts.

The GNOME Maps app received quite a few enhancements in this beta, such as a highway shield renderer using definitions from OSM-Americana to render localized shields in some areas when using the experimental map view, which now uses the new GNOME map style, the ability to show system’s clock format (12h/24h) when sandboxed, as well as refreshed icons in the POI browser UI and refreshed UI for favorites with an empty view.

The GNOME Chess game has been finally updated from v43 to v46 and received highlighting of relevant pieces when the king is checked, a new keyboard shortcut for viewing previous/next moves, HIG (Human Interface Guidelines) support for tooltips, improved style of message dialogs, main menu improvements, and improved shortcut names in the help overlay.

The GNOME Connections app received certificate verification for RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), support for domains, improved onboarding text, improved appdata for AppStream 1.0, and the ability to change the icon when the certificate changes.

GNOME Tweaks received support for searching for shell themes in the default gnome-shell theme directory, support for selecting an accelerated profile for touchpads, and a dark style background option in appearance. The audio overamplification and “Disable Touchpad While Typing” options have been removed.

Last but not least, GNOME Initial Setup received improvements to avatar generation and the Welcome page, GNOME Text Editor now checks for files on disk before restoring drafts to avoid displaying deleted files, and xdg-desktop-portal-gnome got a redesigned screencast screen picker.

Release of GNOME Shell and Mutter 46 Beta: A Preview of Numerous Enhancements

The GNOME Project unveiled the beta versions of the GNOME Shell and Mutter components today, a precursor to the forthcoming GNOME 46 desktop environment series. These new releases contain numerous enhancements.

Features of the GNOME Shell 46 beta include enhanced High Contrast and default styling, the ability to close mount notifications when the drive is disconnected, keyboard model configuration support, a header for notifications, and an improved appearance for symbolic icons within notifications.

Furthermore, the GNOME Text Editor app now comes pre-installed on the dash, the minimize animation has been enhanced, the switch’s look has been tweaked, the process of handling screencast failures has been improved, and the dimming effect is now only used for modal dialogs in the Activities Overview.

The GNOME Extensions app has received several updates, including support for adaptive dialogs and the ability to recall the window state. In addition to these, GNOME Shell 46 beta overhauls the assets in the monitor layout switcher, corrects menu alignment in RTL formats, and introduces missing shift levels for the Georgian OSK layout.

With this release, GNOME Shell will now use a single source for all system notifications. Various bugs were addressed as well in this beta, including effects of transient Wayland windows, feedback look in the keyboard backlight slider, icon size regression in the dash, and overview transition from search results to session.

On the other hand, Mutter 46 beta adds more preparations for upcoming variable refresh rate support, implements mouse cursor hotspots for KMS atomic, refactors Wayland focus management, allows configuration of XKB models, and enables KMS deadline timer after a VT switch if it was inhibited.

Furthermore, Mutter 46 beta restores IM state flushing before handling key events, adds support for the Broadcast RGB/RGB range KMS property, adds support for the EGL configuration format, adds support for handling Alt modifier in pad actions, and adds support for storing eraser and stylus tools separately.

Last but not least, the beta release of Mutter 46 implements direct scanout for cropped and scaled surfaces, fixes lost keyboard focus after dismissing pop-ups, fixes handling of pad ring wrap-arounds, swaps stylus buttons to match traditional order, and fixes centering of non-modal transients over the parent.

Both GNOME Shell and Mutter 46 beta releases received documentation improvements. They will be available for public testing shortly as part of the soon-to-be-released GNOME 46 beta desktop environment, or you can download them separately from here and here.

Introducing The New Global Search Mode in GNOME 46’s Nautilus File Manager

The GNOME 46 desktop environment, months away from its release, is continually getting new additions to many of its default apps, including the Nautilus (Files) file manager that now has a global search mode.

As part of the GNOME 46 development cycle, Nautilus has gained an array of features and enhancements for better file management in GNOME, that include improved discoverability of custom folder icons, the detection of file copy/move operations over the 4GB limit on FAT file systems, a new Network view, and much more.

A few improvements have been made to its search capabilities like the ability to treat markdown files as text documents when searching and the recent addition of a new explicit global search mode that should be available for public testing as a GNOME 46 beta release due next week.

Nautilus, as known in the GNOME 45 desktop environment series, already has a “Search Everywhere” feature, which allows for a wider scope when searching for files across multiple locations.

It seems that the “Search Everywhere” feature has evolved into a global search feature in the forthcoming GNOME 46 release. In the search button, which has been relocated to the sidebar, the new global search mode is deployed.

Upon hitting this search button, Nautilus opens the Search Everywhere view to assist you in locating files and folders in all your predetermined search locations, as outlined in the Search panel in Settings. This is now in line with most of the default GNOME apps which present the search button on the titlebar’s left side.

In addition, the global search view provides swift access to the Search Locations setting through an “Open Search Settings” button. This button appears prior to initiating the search and when there are no search result findings.

For more details about Nautilus’ new global search mode, you can check out this merge request. Meanwhile, we’re waiting for the beta release of GNOME 46 to take this new feature for a spin.
