The KDE Project has announced the release of KDE Gear 24.08.3, marking the third maintenance update for the KDE Gear 24.08 application suite, tailored for the KDE Plasma desktop environment and the broader GNU/Linux ecosystem.

This update comes nearly a month after KDE Gear 24.08.2 and includes a variety of fixes and improvements across several applications. Notably, it addresses issues within the K3b CD/DVD burning software, enhances the Kate text editor’s capabilities for openSUSE Linux, and introduces WebP thumbnail support in kio-extras.

The KDE Itinerary application has also seen advancements, with new features allowing it to extract data from Thai state railway tickets and updates to handle various ticket formats and languages. Additionally, the Merkuro calendar app has improved its views, geolocation features, and filtering options.

Enhancements were made to the Tokodon client for Mastodon as well, fixing several user interface issues. KTorrent has been updated to support HTTPS webseeds, and further compatibility improvements have been made for several KDE applications, including updates to Kdenlive, Kalzium, and NeoChat to utilize Qt 6.8.

Several other applications, such as AudioTube, Cantor, Elisa, KDevelop, Konsole, Marble, Skanpage, Spectacle, and Zanshin, have also received various fixes. For more details, the full changelog is available.

Looking ahead, the KDE Project is already working on the next major update, KDE Gear 24.12, expected to be released on December 12, 2024, with a beta version set to be available for public testing starting November 14, 2024.

KDE Gear 24.08.3 Released: Enhancements and Fixes for Your Favorite Applications
 

The KDE Project announced the release of KDE Gear 24.08 today, presenting the most recent stable iteration of their open-source suite of applications designed for the KDE Plasma desktop and various GNU/Linux distributions.

Key features of KDE Gear 24.08 highlight enhancements in the Dolphin file manager, which now includes functionalities that simplify accessing and managing files and folders with administrative rights. New integrations feature wizards for software installation, menu options for privilege escalation, and a novel “Move to New Folder…” option that allows users to create a folder and simultaneously move files into it.

The Konsole terminal emulator has been upgraded with a new feature that enhances usability, allowing users to bookmark specific points in lengthy outputs. This is undertaken by double-clicking the scrollbar to place a marker, enabling easy navigation and retrieval later.

Furthermore, KDE Gear 24.08 brings updates to the widely-used Kdenlive video editor, including a new keyframe curve editor for more customized effects, a revamped effects stack widget, a structured grid, improved designs, better handle behavior, and enhancements to the Transform effect, now allowing direct clip selections from the monitor.

Kate, KDE’s advanced text editor, comes with an improved document formatting plugin with better support for bash, d, fish, Nix config, opsi-script, QML, and YAML files, support for the Gleam, PureScript, and Typst languages in the Language Server Protocol (LSP) feature, and an improved Project and Build plugin that now lets you open the build directory of a CMake-based project and get both files and targets.

Kongress, KDE’s companion application for conferences, now supports indoor maps of a venue, while Falkon, KDE’s full-featured web browser, received a new feature that allows users to customize things that affect privacy and functionality on a site-by-site basis.

The chatting applications NeoChat and Tokodon have both been updated with new functionalities in KDE Gear 24.08. NeoChat, a Matrix chat client, enhances your privacy by allowing you to block invitations from unknown users who do not share a common room with you, enhancing your online security. On the other hand, Tokodon, which serves Mastodon users, has introduced notifications for new user registrations on its server, facilitating better user management.

In this release, there have been enhancements in the PDF editing capabilities, including improved support for fillable forms and a more user-friendly zoom in the Okular document viewer, addition of a “Play this next” feature, adjustable sidebar and playlist panes in the Elisa music player, and a new option in PlasmaTube to block sponsored content in videos.
