Discover What’s New in Linux Mint 22.1 “Xia” – Now Available for Download!

The Linux Mint team has officially released Linux Mint 22.1, code-named “Xia,” now available for download from their official mirrors. This version is built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) and features the Linux kernel 6.8.

One of the standout enhancements in this release is the inclusion of the Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment, which comes with a built-in Night Light function, a brand new default theme, and native dialogs. Users will also benefit from an improved Wayland session, simpler sound settings, enhanced notifications, and new features in the file manager Nemo.

Additionally, an updated Bulky file renaming utility has been integrated, allowing users to remove accents from file names. This release also modernizes APT dependencies to improve package management with newly created tools like Aptkit and Captain. The modernization efforts aim to resolve longstanding localization issues, improve overall quality, and ensure compatibility with Wayland, which in turn simplifies the development of essential libraries.

The release is classified as a long-term support version and will receive security updates until 2029. Linux Mint 22.1 can currently be downloaded via the following links:

The Linux Mint team has indicated that they will make an official announcement soon, and users can expect to see the new features available for LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) users shortly thereafter.

Linux Mint 22.1 Set to Launch in December Featuring a Revamped Cinnamon Theme

In the latest monthly newsletter released today, Clement Lefebvre, the project leader of Linux Mint, provides an exclusive look at the new default Cinnamon theme that will debut with Linux Mint 22.1 later this year.

Set to launch in December 2024, coinciding with the Christmas season, Linux Mint 22.1 will come equipped with the upcoming Cinnamon 6.4 desktop environment, which showcases a much darker and more contrasted theme compared to its predecessors. This updated design includes rounded elements, redesigned dialogs, and a noticeable gap between applets and the panel.

The new default Cinnamon theme for Linux Mint 22.1 will also feature a newly designed “Force Quit” dialog created in Clutter that activates when an application becomes unresponsive. Furthermore, the media controls and Workspace OSD have been modernized, a new status applet has been integrated, and enhancements have been made to notifications, animations, and the main menu for the updated Cinnamon theme.

On the technical side, Linux Mint 22.1 will offer a significantly enhanced package management system, utilizing its own Update Manager and Software Sources tools powered by Aptkit and Captain, thereby eliminating reliance on aptdaemon, Synaptic, GDebi, apturl, and other outdated components.

“This allowed us to completely refactor the code in the Update Manager and greatly simplify its architecture. It worked well but it had been written decades ago and some of the techniques and components it relied on weren’t future-proof,” said Clement Lefebvre.

As anticipated, Linux Mint 22.1 will be founded on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat) and will utilize Linux kernel 6.8. This marks the first update in the Linux Mint 22 series, which will continue to receive software updates and security patches until 2029.
