Discover What’s New in Firefox 147: Now Available for Download!

Mozilla has announced the release of Firefox 147, the latest version of its open-source web browser, ahead of the official launch scheduled for January 13, 2026. This update introduces several new features and enhancements aimed at improving the user experience.

One of the key features in Firefox 147 is its support for Freedesktop.org’s XDG Base Directory Specification and zero-copy hardware-decoded video support on AMD GPUs, enabling better video playback performance. Additionally, it includes support for the Safe Browsing V5 protocol and WebGPU for Apple Silicon Macs.

For Linux users, Firefox 147 aligns window and rendering surface sizes with the actual pixel grid used by GNOME’s Mutter window manager. This adjustment results in sharper content rendering on fractionally scaled displays, enhancing visual clarity regardless of window size.

The release also features Compression Dictionaries, based on IETF RFC 9842, which reduces the bytes required to load pages, benefiting users with limited bandwidth by speeding up page load times. An exciting addition is the auto-open functionality for the Picture-in-Picture player, which activates when a tab playing video is backgrounded—a feature that has now transitioned from Firefox Labs to being a default option.

The Tabs settings have been reorganized for ease of use, split into three categories: Opening, Interaction, and Closing. A new Profiles section has also been added under General settings to help manage user profiles, making it easier to separate personal and work-related browsing aspects.

Firefox 147 introduces productivity features like “Lists and timer on Firefox Home,” designed to assist users in focusing, tracking tasks, and setting reminders. Among the notable bug fixes, improvements have been made specifically for HTTP/3 requests and tab selection compatibility for Windows users.

Additional enhancements for web developers include support for the Navigation API, Storage-Access-Headers for unpartitioned cookies, new CSS properties, and better compatibility for modern web apps through module service workers.

Mozilla is expected to unveil the official release of Firefox 147 along with other versions on January 13, 2026. Users can access the source tarball and binaries for various system architectures from Mozilla’s FTP server.

Firefox Introduces “AI Kill Switch”: A Feature to Completely Disable AI Capabilities

Mozilla recently announced that Firefox will include an “AI Kill Switch” feature aimed at allowing users to entirely disable any AI functionalities incorporated into the web browser. This decision follows a controversial statement from the newly appointed CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, who suggested a transformative vision for Firefox, asserting it would evolve into a "modern AI browser."

Anthony Enzor-DeMeo explained that Firefox is set to become a part of a broader ecosystem of trusted software, yet it will remain grounded as the company’s primary offering. However, the details regarding an AI kill switch were clarified later to emphasize user control over AI features. Firefox developer Jake Archibald mentioned the intention behind the feature, indicating that it would enable users to completely turn off all AI capabilities, which will be entirely optional to use.

Archibald acknowledged the potential confusion around the term “opt-in” for new functionalities, yet stressed that the kill switch would unequivocally eliminate any AI features, ensuring they would not appear in the future.

The forthcoming version of Firefox, expected to be released on January 13, 2026, known as Firefox 147, will also provide support for the XDG Base Directory Specification. This indicates a commitment to aligning with existing standards while navigating the integration of AI into the web browsing experience.

The announcement reassures long-time users that as long as AI features remain optional and respectful of user preference, the essence of Firefox will continue to resonate with its community.

Firefox 144: Enhanced Encryption for Secure Login Management in Firefox Password Manager

With the recent launch of Firefox 143, Mozilla has promoted the upcoming version, Firefox 144, to the beta channel for public testing. This new release focuses on enhancing the security of saved logins in the Firefox Password Manager. The update will transition from the outdated 3DES-CBC encryption method to the more modern AES-256-CBC, thereby strengthening the local encryption of logins stored on disk.

Mozilla notes that this change is limited to local encryption; logins synced through Firefox Sync remain end-to-end encrypted with the already robust AES-256-GCM.

In addition to encryption improvements, Firefox 144 introduces a more user-friendly Picture-in-Picture feature, allowing users to close the PiP window without interrupting the video by using Shift + Click on the close button or Shift + Esc to exit. For Firefox on Android, the version will also see the removal of the setting that allowed screenshots during private browsing sessions.

Web developers will benefit from various new features in Firefox 144. Updates include support for the Element.moveBefore API, enhancements to the PerformanceEventTiming.interactionId, and added support for the View Transition API. Developers can also crop and downscale video capture using the new resizeMode constraint in getUserMedia.

Furthermore, the update includes support for the WebGPU API’s GPUDevice.importExternalTexture on Windows systems and introduces an upsert proposal for Map and WeakMap objects. Other technical enhancements include worker transfer support for RTCDataChannel, and updates to methods in the ScreenOrientation interface for Windows tablets and Android devices.

Firefox Labs receives attention as well, debuting a new feature titled "Lists and timer on Firefox Home," promoting productivity by helping users manage to-do lists and set timers for focus.

Mozilla plans to release Firefox 144 officially on October 14, 2025, alongside other updates, including Firefox 140.4 and 115.29.0 ESR. Meanwhile, users can download the latest Firefox 144 beta from the official website, keeping in mind that it should not be used for production work.

Firefox 142 Now Available: Discover the New Features and Enhancements!

After a month-long beta phase, Firefox 142 is officially available for download ahead of its launch on August 19, 2025. This latest version brings several enhancements aimed at improving user experience and website compatibility.

One of the key features in Firefox 142 is the introduction of a flexible exception list for the Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) Strict mode. This update resolves issues with broken site functionalities caused by tracker blocking. Users can now manage exceptions based on core functionalities and additional features, enhancing site usability while maintaining privacy.

Additionally, the release allows the removal of extensions from the sidebar by right-clicking the extension icon and selecting "Remove from Sidebar." Users will also notice improved scrolling speeds in the Bookmarks dialog, ensuring it doesn’t extend beyond its designated area. The drag-and-drop support for blob images has been enhanced as well.

Firefox 142 also refines the search results in the address bar by minimizing the chances of duplicating results from browsing history. It further upgrades the Netmonitor feature, allowing for better visibility of request headers, cookies, and parameters, even if the request is not fully completed.

For web developers, Firefox 142 introduces support for the wllama API for extensions. This allows developers to integrate local language model capabilities directly into their add-ons. Furthermore, it offers support for the URLPattern API, enabling standardized pattern matching for URLs, and the Prioritized Task Scheduling API, which aids in managing task priorities.

Additional updates include the ability for developers to accurately retrieve selected text ranges across shadow DOM boundaries using the Selection.getComposedRanges() API, along with a new setting in the Debugger providing control over the visibility of the debugger overlay during paused script execution.

Mozilla is set to officially unveil Firefox 142 alongside the Firefox ESR releases tomorrow. Until then, users can download the source code and binaries for various system architectures from Mozilla’s FTP server.

Firefox 141 Has Arrived: New Features and Updates to Explore!

Mozilla has officially released the Firefox 141 open-source web browser, ahead of its planned unveiling on July 22, 2025. This version introduces several enhancements, particularly for Linux users, including reduced memory usage and no longer requiring a mandatory restart when updates are applied via package managers.

One notable feature is the integration of AI to suggest tabs and names for tab groups, which is enabled by default. Users can opt-out of this feature in the General settings under the Tabs section. The New Tab page has also been revamped, replacing the wheel icon with a "Customize" button that features a fade-in/out effect for customizing the page’s wallpaper and shortcut layout.

For users in Valencian regions, Firefox 141 now includes a built-in Catalan dictionary for spell-checking. Additionally, Windows users benefit from support for system-provided font icons in the caption buttons on Windows 11, along with the adoption of WebGPU technology.

Developers will find several improvements as well, such as reenabled support for CHIPS (Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State) and new attributes that improve caching capabilities. This update also expands support for the webkitdirectory HTML attribute in Firefox for Android, enhancing file input options.

Mozilla plans to officially unveil Firefox 141 alongside the Firefox 140.1 ESR and Firefox 128.13 ESR releases tomorrow. The source code and binaries for various architectures, including 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM64, can already be downloaded from Mozilla’s FTP server.

Firefox 141 Beta Released: Optimized for Lower Memory Usage on Linux Systems

Mozilla has released Firefox 141 to the beta channel for public testing. This release follows the promotion of Firefox 140 to the stable channel as the latest Extended Support Release (ESR).

Firefox 141 is poised to enhance memory usage on Linux systems and eliminates the need for a forced restart when updates are applied via the package manager. Among the new features, users can now drag tabs to and from the pinned tabs tray, improving tab management. Additionally, the customization options on the New Tab page have been refined, replacing the wheel icon with a dynamic “Customize” button.

For web developers, Firefox 141 reintroduces support for Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State (CHIPS) and implements the closedby attribute, which helps ensure that private details from previous sessions are not exposed after a user signs out. The update includes support for the webkitdirectory attribute, enhancing functionalities for Firefox on Android.

Add-on developers will benefit from the i18n.getPreferredSystemLanguages method, which retrieves the system’s preferred locales, complementing existing localization methods.

Firefox 141 is scheduled for general release on July 22, 2025. Until then, interested users can download the beta version from the official website, though it is advised not to use it for production environments.

Introducing Firefox 138: Explore the New Contrast Control Settings in Public Beta!

Mozilla has recently announced the release of Firefox 138 for public beta testing, following the rollout of Firefox 137. This upcoming version includes some notable enhancements designed to improve user experience, particularly for Linux and macOS users.

One of the key features in Firefox 138 is the ability to copy links for background tabs via the tabstrip context menu. Additionally, the improved autofill functionality for addresses and credit cards aims to better handle dynamically updated forms.

The beta version introduces enhanced tab grouping features, allowing users to easily add tabs to new groups or remove them from existing groups through right-click context menu options. This builds on the tab groups feature that began rolling out with Firefox 137.

Firefox 138 also revamps color settings into a new Contrast Control feature. This tool allows users to maintain consistent colors across websites for better readability. By default, these settings are turned off, but users have the option to choose between automatic and custom settings.

Moreover, the update will help users report broken sites directly from the hamburger menu, which allows Mozilla to address issues to enhance compatibility and overall browsing experience for Firefox users.

For Android users, this release brings significant enhancements like support for TLS client authentication certificates, sharing downloaded files or their original URLs, and enabling desktop mode by default for Android tablets. Windows 11 users will also benefit from acrylic-style menus in pop-up windows.

Developers can expect improved compatibility with web standards, as Firefox 138 introduces several enhancements including error.captureStackTrace, Error.isError, and support for Import Attributes to specify metadata during module imports.

Mozilla plans to officially launch Firefox 138 on April 29, 2025. Until then, users can download the latest beta version from the official website. It’s important to note that these are pre-release versions and should not be used for production work.

Dillo 3.2: Celebrating 25 Years of Open-Source Web Browsing

Dillo, the lightweight open-source web browser, has just released version 3.2 to mark its 25th anniversary. This update brings several enhancements, including basic support for SVG images and WebP image formats, along with a new scrollbar page navigation mode that allows users to scroll through pages as if reading a book.

In this latest release, developers introduced initial SVG support, which can help render mathematical formulas and simple SVG graphics. Users can also take advantage of the new scrollbar functionality that facilitates page navigation—clicking on the vertical scrollbar with the left mouse button scrolls one page down while the right mouse button scrolls back up. Additionally, the new scroll_page_overlap option lets users configure the overlap visibility of consecutive pages.

Further improvements include the link_action feature, which permits setting custom commands for opening new URLs, and options to reposition the vertical scrollbar on the left side of the webpage. Zoom controls have also been added allowing users to easily adjust text size via keyboard shortcuts.

On top of these features, Dillo 3.2 allows for a customizable new tab page and adds line-numbered anchors to HTML source views. It now displays JSON data as plain text and includes options that set defaults for opening new tabs and displaying quit dialog boxes.

Another significant enhancement involves image resizing that now maintains aspect ratios and adds reload functionality for live previews of web page edits. Support for various CSS units—from ch to vmax—has also been included, along with an ignore_image_formats option to bypass certain image types.

Dillo 3.2 can be downloaded from the project’s GitHub page as a source tarball, requiring users to compile it manually on their GNU/Linux distributions. While the browser celebrated 25 years since its inception on December 15, 2024, it is worth noting that Dillo may not fully support many modern websites, including popular platforms like YouTube, which limits its practical use in the current digital landscape.

Firefox 135 Enters Public Beta: Now Featuring XZ Packaging for Linux Users

The latest version of Firefox, 135, is now available for public beta testing, introducing several noteworthy features aimed at improving user experience on Linux. This release follows the stable launch of Firefox 134 and marks the first instance of Firefox utilizing XZ packaging, which promises faster installations, smaller downloads, and better compatibility with modern Linux distributions.

Among the new features, users can now close only the current tab when utilizing the Quit keyboard shortcut while multiple tabs are open. Additionally, the browser will provide safeguards against websites overwhelming the back history with a rapid series of visits.

A significant change in this version is the renaming of the right-click context menu item from "Copy Without Site Tracking" to "Copy Clean Link." This modification aims to clarify the functionality of this feature, which removes known tracking parameters from URLs. This capability is now also applicable to plain text links.

Although not highlighted in the release notes, some options have been removed, including the "Actions" entry from the search shortcuts and the "Send websites a ‘Do Not Track’ request" option from Privacy & Security settings. Additionally, Firefox 135 introduces a new feature in search settings that displays search terms in the address bar on results pages, which is enabled by default.

Users can also look forward to the much-anticipated Cookie Banner Blocker, a feature designed to automatically refuse cookie banners from appearing. The beta version promises enhancements for Android users, including an optional setting for automatically submitting crash reports to improve debugging processes.

Mozilla intends to officially launch Firefox 135 on February 4th, 2025, concurrent with other releases including Firefox 128.7 and Firefox 115.20 ESR. You can download the latest beta version from the official website, but caution is advised as these are pre-release versions and should not be used for critical work.

Firefox 132 Beta Launch: Enhanced Privacy with Third-Party Cookie Blocking

Today marks the rollout of the Firefox 131 to all compatible platforms, as Mozilla also advances to the next major update, Firefox 132, which has now entered the beta phase for public evaluation.

The Firefox 132 release may seem uneventful, but it introduces several key enhancements. It includes the capability to block access to third-party cookies using the Strict mode of Enhanced Tracking Protection, the ability to block HTTP favicons unless they are served via HTTPS, and the activation of WebRender hardware accelerated rendering for a majority of SVG Filter Primitives, ultimately enhancing the performance of graphic-intensive content.

Moreover, the forthcoming Firefox update resolves a problem concerning the “expire” attribute value for cookies by including the time difference between the server and local times, while also discontinuing support for the HTTP/2 Push protocol due to compatibility challenges with various sites.

For users on Android, Firefox 132 is set to allow adjustments to the visual viewport of a web page when the software keyboard appears, without altering its layout viewport. Mozilla noted that this modification will prevent costly reflows and deliver a more user-friendly layout across many web pages.

For web developers, Firefox 132 introduces support for a post-quantum key exchange mechanism for TLS 1.3 (mlkem768x25519). Additionally, it brings support for the requestVideoFrameCallback() method on the HTMLVideoElement interface, allowing for efficient operations on each video frame. There is also the getCapabilities method, enabling applications to gather the media capabilities available for the live MediaStreamTrack, along with support for the fetchpriority attribute.

“The fetchpriority attribute allows web developers to enhance resource loading by determining the relative priority for resources fetched by the browser. It accepts three values: auto (default priority), low (lower priority), and high (higher priority). This attribute can be applied to script, link, and img elements, the RequestInit parameter of the fetch() method, and Link response headers. The interpretation details are left to individual implementers by the HTML specification. Typically, Firefox will use it to adjust the urgency parameter of HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 requests,” explained Mozilla.

The much-anticipated Cookie Banner Blocker feature returns in the beta version of Firefox, which automatically declines cookie banners on your behalf. While it may not appear in the final release, there’s hope it will still make the cut.

Mozilla is set to launch Firefox 132 on October 29th, 2024, alongside the releases of Firefox 128.4 and Firefox 115.17 ESR. In the meantime, you can experiment with the latest beta version of Firefox 132 by downloading the binaries from the official website. Please remember that this version is a pre-release and is not suitable for production use, as it could potentially result in data loss.
