Exploring the New Features in Linux Mint 22.2 Beta Release

Linux Mint has released the beta version of its latest operating system, Linux Mint 22.2, codenamed "Zara." This version marks the third update in the Linux Mint 22 series and builds upon the features introduced in Linux Mint 22.1. It is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and includes the latest hardware enablement updates.

What’s New in Linux Mint 22.2?

Visual Improvements
This update brings enhancements to the Cinnamon desktop experience, focusing on visual aspects beyond the earlier revamped themes. The login screen now features a blurred background for a sleek appearance, along with user avatars displayed on the account box, addressing prior feedback about the desktop looking dated. The Mint-Y theme has been updated with a pinch of blue, subtly enhancing the appearance while maintaining familiarity.

Fingerprint Support
A new desktop utility called Fingwit has been introduced, allowing users with fingerprint readers to manage and use their fingerprints for authentication when logging in or performing administrative tasks.

Sticky Notes Sync
The Notes app, commonly known as Sticky, receives updates that include rounded corners and new Wayland support. The most exciting addition is a companion app for Android that allows users to sync notes between devices seamlessly.

Hypnotix Enhancements
The IPTV app Hypnotix now offers two additional viewing modes: Theatre and Borderless, improving flexibility for users who multitask while watching TV content. Other performance enhancements have been made, including better channel loading times and improved user experience regarding audio settings.

Software Updates
The beta version also includes a range of software updates, including new versions of GNOME Calendar, Simple Scan, and a new thumbnailer for AIFF files. Furthermore, the Warpinator app now supports iOS and iPadOS for cross-device file sharing.

Installing and Testing the Beta

Those interested in testing Linux Mint 22.2 Beta can download it from the Linux Mint website. The system requirements remain the same as previous versions: a 64-bit Intel/AMD PC with at least 2GB of RAM. It is advisable to check a known issues list before installation, as beta versions may have unresolved bugs.

For current users of Linux Mint 22.1, an upgrade to 22.2 will be available after the stable release expected early next month. All releases in the Linux Mint 22.x series will be supported with updates until 2029.
