RPM 6.0 has been launched, marking a significant update to the RPM package manager system utilized by Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora-based distributions. This new version introduces several important features aimed at enhancing security and functionality.
Notable highlights include the capability to enforce signature checking by default and support for multiple OpenPGP signatures per package. Additionally, RPM 6.0 adopts OpenPGP v6 and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) keys and signatures, along with improved support for updating previously imported keys. Moreover, the package manager now accommodates both RPM v4 and v6 packages.
The update allows users to utilize the full key ID or fingerprint for OpenPGP key identification throughout the system. It also features a revamped man page, enhancements to the rpmkeys(8)
and rpmsign(1)
commands, and the introduction of new query tag extensions and a query formatter for hash algorithm names.
New functionalities include the --filemime
query alias for per-file MIME information, consistent messaging terminology in signature and key processes, and configurable digest calculations during verification, which are stored in the rpmdb format.
RPM 6.0 also brings a command for simplified auto-signing configuration (rpm-setup-autosign(1)
), along with macros and functions for evaluating and managing various aspects of the package management process. This release has added new identifiers associated with SHA-3 and RFC-9580, expanded per-package verification controls, and introduced new operation flags related to signing.
Among the adjustments made, RPM 6.0 has dropped support for installing RPM v3 packages, resolved several scriptlet errors that were not reflected in transaction codes, and improved Python module isolation features.
For those looking to download RPM 6.0, it is available via source tarball from GitHub. This version will be the default package manager in upcoming releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and its derivatives, including Fedora Linux 43.
