Amazon is set to transition its Fire TV devices from Android to a new homegrown operating system named Vega OS by 2025. Currently, Fire-branded devices, including tablets, utilize Fire OS, which is based on Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This reliance has often restricted these devices to outdated software, as evidenced by the recent Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet that runs on Fire OS 8, which is based on Android 11 from 2020.
Some Amazon devices, such as the Echo Hub and the Echo Show 5, already run on this proprietary software, but the company has not publicly confirmed its existence until now. A job listing revealed by Lowpass indicated Amazon is seeking a software development manager for the “Prime Video Fire TV" team, suggesting the launch of the dedicated Prime Video app on Vega OS.
Despite this exciting development, it appears that existing Fire TV devices will not be updated to Vega. This strategic shift aims to increase Amazon’s control over its streaming devices and monetization strategies as the tech landscape evolves towards a greater emphasis on software and recurring revenue.
Transitioning away from Google’s ecosystem could provide Amazon with a significant competitive advantage in the consumer tech market. With the ongoing shift toward managing software and ads, owning the operating system for Fire streaming devices enables Amazon to integrate its upcoming generative AI voice assistant, Alexa+, and potentially enhance user experiences, such as content recommendations based on voice interactions.
This move may also mitigate previous dependency issues with Google, especially regarding manufacturing partnerships that have posed obstacles in the past. A proprietary OS would help free Amazon from constraints created by existing arrangements with Google, paving the way for future growth in the streaming sector.
Insider sources suggest that Amazon may announce Vega OS during its upcoming devices event in New York City, although previous announcements have not materialized as expected.
