Linux Mint Develops Comprehensive System Information Tool: What You Need to Know

The upcoming release of Linux Mint 22.3 will introduce a revamped System Information tool designed to provide users with detailed insights into their hardware. This tool is not entirely new but is an enhanced version of the previous System Reports feature, now offering additional capabilities and a new name, akin to a Linux variant of CPU-Z.

The goal of this update is to facilitate the identification of hardware devices, components, and drivers in use. This specificity aims to save users time when addressing hardware issues within Mint’s support channels or related projects. While all of the information displayed can be accessed via the command line, the new GUI simplifies the troubleshooting process, making it more user-friendly.

The upgraded tool retains the ability to show an overview of System Information, System Reports, and Crash Reports, while expanding its coverage with four new sections that provide more detailed information on devices:

  • USB: Displays details about attached devices, including type, name, and ID, organized by controller.
  • GPU: Provides information on the graphics card model, driver, and hardware acceleration support.
  • PCI: Shares details about internal components, such as type, brand, driver, and ID.
  • BIOS: Communicates information on the motherboard, BIOS version, boot mode, and secure-boot status.

The USB section acts as a Linux alternative to the USB Tree Viewer for Windows, showing device speed and power alongside the maximum connection speed and total power capacity of the controller.

Alongside the new System Information tool, Linux Mint 22.3 will also debut a new System Administration tool, which will have a similar layout but focus on administrative tasks. Currently in development, this tool will include a Boot Menu section, allowing users to manage boot options, including hiding or showing the boot menu (GRUB) and configuring wait times before booting the default option.

Both enhancements will be preinstalled in Linux Mint 22.3, which is expected to be released in late December 2025 or early January 2026.
