VLC has released version 3.0.22 of its open-source media player, which includes notable enhancements and new features. This update, the first since 3.0.21, introduces support for the dav1d-all-layers option within the AV1 decoder, allowing users to output all spatial layers from a scalable AV1 bitstream. This can also be accessed through the command-line interface using the --alllayers argument.
The update brings A_ATRAC/AT1 support in Matroska (MKV) files along with the capability of handling images within FLAC containers. Additionally, it has integrated an AMD GPU Frame Rate Doubler (Direct3D11) video filter, provides options for a dark palette in the Qt interface, and enhances the handling of mkv-use-chapter-codec functionalities.
Other changes include compilation support for Qt 6 and updated versions of Qt 5, improved stretch mode in wingdi, and the introduction of Windows ARM64 builds. The release also addresses various bugs affecting operations such as Opus channel mapping, hardware decoding for XVID MPEG-4 files, and has optimized DVD CEA-608 caption parsing.
VLC 3.0.22 has patched several security vulnerabilities in multiple demuxers and decoders. Users can download it from the official website. Users who prefer not to compile from source can expect the update to appear in stable repositories or as a Flatpak app on Flathub soon. The VLC development team is also working on the upcoming major release, VLC 4.0.
