Mozilla recently announced that Firefox will include an “AI Kill Switch” feature aimed at allowing users to entirely disable any AI functionalities incorporated into the web browser. This decision follows a controversial statement from the newly appointed CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, who suggested a transformative vision for Firefox, asserting it would evolve into a "modern AI browser."
Anthony Enzor-DeMeo explained that Firefox is set to become a part of a broader ecosystem of trusted software, yet it will remain grounded as the company’s primary offering. However, the details regarding an AI kill switch were clarified later to emphasize user control over AI features. The forthcoming version of Firefox, expected to be released on January 13, 2026, known as Firefox 147, will also provide support for the XDG Base Directory Specification.
