A public beta of Orion for Linux has been released, allowing users to download and test the web browser. This application, developed by Kagi, is built on WebKit and has been stable on macOS and iOS, with a Linux version announced last year and alpha builds available for Orion+ subscribers since January.
Orion is distinct from Chromium and Firefox, as it is a native Linux app using GTK4/libadwaita and WebKitGTK. Its design aligns closely with GNOME Web, but with a broader scope. In a recent update, the company expressed excitement over this beta release, noting the groundwork laid for upcoming features.
The early beta offers a glimpse into Orion’s capabilities. It is functional, enabling web page loading, tab management, bookmark additions, password saving, and various tab layouts. However, due to its beta status, it is not yet suitable as a daily driver. Users may experience challenges like an address bar without autocomplete or history, and some desired features, like Page Tweaks for customizable site displays, are not yet operational.
Interface-wise, Orion has successfully transitioned its macOS aesthetics to fit the modern GNOME style, despite a rather crowded toolbar and a settings page that may not display properly on certain screen resolutions. Users are advised that bugs and functionality issues are typical for a beta version, but the framework indicates strong developmental potential.
Orion remains free to download and use, although the optional Orion+ subscription offers funding for development, access to updates, and a greater influence on product direction. Although Kagi releases some open-source components, the browser isn’t fully open source, which could influence user decisions compared to alternatives like Chrome or Firefox.
To download Orion for Linux, users who subscribed to the Orion newsletter have received a download link to the Flatpak version. For those who didn’t register, the beta is still accessible. On Ubuntu, the installation requires a couple of steps, including enabling Flatpak:
sudo apt install flatpakflatpak install /path/to/oriongtk.earlybeta.flatpak
Orion’s dependencies will also be downloaded as part of the GNOME 49 runtime, increasing the initial size. Users are encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences.
