Critical Linux Vulnerability CVE-2026-98432 Explained: What RHEL 8, 9, and 10 Users Need to Know

On October 30, 2026, Red Hat warned of a critical Linux vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-98432. It has a CVSS severity score of 9.8 out of 10 and may be exploitable remotely without an attacker logging in.

The flaw affects the Linux kernel, the core component that manages a system’s memory, processor, and network activity. Red Hat lists RHEL 8, 9, and 10 among the affected products, along with certain real-time kernels and OpenShift products. The standard RHEL 7 kernel is listed as unaffected by this specific issue, though that does not mean older systems are free of other security risks.

What the vulnerability could allow

The issue concerns IPv4 and TCP network processing. Under certain conditions, concurrent handling of network connection requests may cause a use-after-free error: memory that a process is still using may be released too early. An attacker could potentially trigger the flaw by carefully timing network communications.

Possible consequences include:

  • A server becoming unstable or stopping
  • Memory corruption
  • Potential remote code execution under specific conditions

The possibility of a remote attack does not mean that malicious code execution is guaranteed. Red Hat’s high severity rating reflects the potential impact if the vulnerability is successfully exploited; it does not indicate how often attacks are occurring.

An attacker must also be able to reach a vulnerable TCP service. Blocking unnecessary connections can reduce exposure, but an internal network is not automatically safe. Systems accessible to office devices, through VPNs, or from other internal servers may still need to be assessed.

Recommended steps for administrators

Start by identifying the systems and kernel versions in use:

cat /etc/redhat-releaseuname -r

These commands provide version information, but the numbers alone do not confirm whether the vulnerability has been fixed. Compare your installed packages with Red Hat’s official advisories and apply the appropriate update when it becomes available.

Administrators should also review which networks and devices can reach affected TCP services, and restrict access that is not required. Temporary filtering measures may be available, but they can disrupt legitimate traffic, so they should be tested and applied carefully in production environments.

Windows and macOS are not directly affected by this specific Linux kernel vulnerability. However, services used from those computers may rely on Linux servers, and an affected server could cause an indirect outage.
