Larian Studios has released a new update for Baldur’s Gate 3 that introduces a Native Linux version specifically designed for the Steam Deck. Previously, players had to rely on Proton to run the Windows version of the game, but the update aims to enhance performance with more stable framerates, shorter loading times, and improved gameplay.
In addition to optimizations for the Steam Deck, Larian noted that this update brings overall enhancements that benefit all platforms. Players should experience reduced framerate spikes, especially in busy areas like the Lower City in Act 3. The update ensures that players won’t lose their save data during the transition, provided their Steam Cloud is updated. Larian also published a dedicated guide to assist players with the switch to the new version.
However, Larian confirmed that desktop Linux support is not part of this release, clarifying that:

Larian does not provide support for the Linux platform. The Steam Deck Native build is only supported on Steam Deck.
This means players on desktop Linux will have to continue using Proton, as the Native Linux version is only available on the Steam Deck. Initially, the Native version would not download on desktop systems, displaying either an empty download or failing to update existing installations. Fortunately, an update has since addressed this issue, allowing downloads on Desktop Linux.
The update also features numerous fixes aimed at improving overall game performance, addressing bugs, and enhancing audio quality. This includes fixes for various crashes, gameplay bugs affecting difficulty modifiers, and a range of sound effects that didn’t play correctly.
