BenQ Launches Linux Version of Display Pilot 2 Software: What You Need to Know

BenQ has recently announced a Linux version of its Display Pilot 2 software, a notable addition that brings enhanced functionality for users of its RD series coding monitors. The announcement was timed with the launch of the new BenQ RD280UG monitor, a 28-inch device with a 3:2 aspect ratio, boasting a resolution of 3840×2560 at a 120 Hz refresh rate. This model is priced at $699/£599 and includes several features managed through the Display Pilot 2 software.

The RD280UG is part of a trio of 28-inch programming monitors, including the original RD280U and the RD280UA, which comes with an ergonomic arm. The RD280UG adds enhancements like VRR support, improved contrast ratio, increased peak brightness, and built-in speakers rated at 3W.

Previously, the Display Pilot 2 software was available for Windows and macOS, where it could control monitor features and allow keyboard brightness controls on macOS. The newly added Linux version, however, is currently limited to the RD series monitors. This Linux application permits users to customize coding and browser shortcut buttons, adjust rear bias lighting, and implement various lighting modes.

BenQ indicates that the Linux version of the software is designed for Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS using GNOME 46, compatible with X11. However, it can also operate under Wayland with some reported issues when run through X11. Although I haven’t tested the software myself due to lack of a compatible monitor, users who do have the supported devices can find an AppImage on BenQ’s official Display Pilot 2 download page. It’s essential to read the release notes for insights about known issues.

While Display Pilot 2 for Linux is still in its early stages, it marks a significant advancement in accessibility for Linux users. Feedback from users will be crucial in enhancing the software’s features in future updates. If you’re interested in the RD280UG or other supported monitors, it’s anticipated to be available soon through various retailers.
