The Arch Linux-based CachyOS has released a new ISO snapshot for January 2026, featuring the latest updates, enhancements, and new functionalities aimed at improving user experience.
This new CachyOS release includes KDE Plasma 6.5.5, which comes equipped with the Wayland session set as the default and introduces the new Plasma Login Manager, a significant upgrade replacing SDDM for fresh installations. The release also supports both stable and LTS kernels to enhance hardware compatibility, catering especially to newer devices.
Noteworthy features in this release are a new service that displays the synchronization status of CachyOS mirrors and an updated NVIDIA module, designed to minimize interrupt time for low-latency displays. Further improvements include the installation of nouveau-fw for older NVIDIA GPUs, facilitating VA-API support for Kepler-series cards, as well as new support for advanced AMD GPU features such as FSR4 ML Frame Generation on RDNA4 and RDNA3 graphics when using Proton-CachyOS.
Improvements extend beyond graphics support; the Proton-CachyOS system also exhibits enhanced functionalities, including new DualSense haptic feedback patches, keyboard layout enhancements, and better management of DLSS preset selections.
The installation process has been refined too. The Calamares installer now showcases a bootloader selection page and offers LUKS2 encryption for GRUB, which adds an extra layer of security. This release has also implemented single-level compression for NVMe drives utilizing Btrfs, leading to a reduced total download size.
Additionally, the GNOME installation has been streamlined, with a dedicated section for GNOME apps and a cleaner interface. Handheld device detection has transitioned from "HHD" to steamos-manager with inputplumber, further enhancing the user experience.
