The developers of CachyOS have unveiled the July 2025 update for this Arch Linux-based distribution, introducing several exciting features aimed at enhancing user experience. Notably, users can now select their preferred shell during the installation process. They have the choice between cachyos-fish-config and cachyos-zsh-config, with the system defaulting to Bash if no selection is made. Despite this change, the default configuration will remain Fish, consistent with previous versions.
In addition to the shell selection, this update defaults new installations of the KDE Plasma desktop environment to a Wayland session. For systems that do not support Wayland, an X11 session will be installed automatically to ensure functionality. The update incorporates the latest KDE Plasma version, 6.4.2.
Other enhancements include the addition of fwupd to both the KDE Plasma and GNOME variants and the removal of the systemd-oomd feature, which was associated with user-reported issues. There is now improved support for AMD Anti-Lag 2 within Proton-CachyOS and enhancements to the Wine-Wayland integration with the inclusion of PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE.
The July 2025 release also phases out support for the cachy-browser package, replacing it with cachyos-firefox-settings, which is designed for use with standard Firefox installations. Furthermore, the Handheld Edition has received updates, featuring support for the Lenovo Legion Go device and various configuration improvements.
