The latest release from the developers of CachyOS, an Arch Linux-based distribution, is the ISO snapshot for May 2025. This version brings several enhancements, notably improved support for older NVIDIA GPUs, a new boot splash animation, and the latest Proton 10 for an enhanced gaming experience.
Built on the Linux 6.14 kernel series, the May 2025 snapshot includes the KDE Plasma 6.3.5 desktop environment, alongside KDE Gear 25.04.1 and KDE Frameworks 6.14, all utilizing the Qt 6.9 application framework. A significant feature in this release is its improved support for older NVIDIA GPUs, such as the 10xx series, which automatically loads the appropriate NVIDIA module at boot.
Additionally, the developers have implemented an updated Proton-CachyOS based on Proton 10. The new version retains most features from Proton 9 and adds Wayland support for the Steam Linux Runtime, wine-wayland fixes, FSR4 Upgrade support, and Dual Sense haptic feedback, aimed at enhancing the gaming experience.
Other updates in this version include the removal of Cachy-Browser in favor of Firefox, the elimination of the “Discover” Taskbar entry, and an update to ddcutil to address crashes within the KDE Plasma environment. There have been improvements to the Handheld Edition as well, including updates to Game Mode, convolver profiles, and a switch from powerbuttond to steam-powerbuttond for smoother standby transitions. The integrated SteamOS-Manager replaces the previous “hhd” functionality within devices like the MSI Claw and others.
