Mozilla has announced the release of Firefox 147, the latest version of its open-source web browser, ahead of the official launch scheduled for January 13, 2026. This update introduces several new features and enhancements aimed at improving the user experience.
One of the key features in Firefox 147 is its support for Freedesktop.org’s XDG Base Directory Specification and zero-copy hardware-decoded video support on AMD GPUs, enabling better video playback performance. Additionally, it includes support for the Safe Browsing V5 protocol and WebGPU for Apple Silicon Macs.
For Linux users, Firefox 147 aligns window and rendering surface sizes with the actual pixel grid used by GNOME’s Mutter window manager. This adjustment results in sharper content rendering on fractionally scaled displays, enhancing visual clarity regardless of window size.
The release also features Compression Dictionaries, based on IETF RFC 9842, which reduces the bytes required to load pages, benefiting users with limited bandwidth by speeding up page load times. An exciting addition is the auto-open functionality for the Picture-in-Picture player, which activates when a tab playing video is backgrounded—a feature that has now transitioned from Firefox Labs to being a default option.
The Tabs settings have been reorganized for ease of use, split into three categories: Opening, Interaction, and Closing. A new Profiles section has also been added under General settings to help manage user profiles, making it easier to separate personal and work-related browsing aspects.
Firefox 147 introduces productivity features like “Lists and timer on Firefox Home,” designed to assist users in focusing, tracking tasks, and setting reminders. Among the notable bug fixes, improvements have been made specifically for HTTP/3 requests and tab selection compatibility for Windows users.
Additional enhancements for web developers include support for the Navigation API, Storage-Access-Headers for unpartitioned cookies, new CSS properties, and better compatibility for modern web apps through module service workers.
