Google is taking steps to enhance the performance of graphical Linux applications running on Android devices. Currently, these applications rely on CPU-based rendering, which leads to sluggish performance, increased battery drain, and higher thermal output. To address this, Google is introducing a new feature that enables GPU-accelerated rendering through a technology called gfxstream.
Gfxstream allows graphics API calls to be forwarded directly from a guest Linux virtual machine to the host Android device’s GPU, facilitating near-native performance for graphical applications. Evidence of this upgrade was discovered in the latest Android Canary release, specifically within the settings of the Linux Terminal app, which includes a “Graphics Acceleration” option. While only a software renderer toggle (related to the existing CPU-based renderer) is currently visible, a hidden option for a “GPU-accelerated renderer” points to the imminent introduction of gfxstream.
Although the latest Canary release’s graphical display mode is currently inoperative on some devices, initial insights suggest that implementing gfxstream will significantly enhance the performance of Linux apps with graphical user interfaces, far surpassing the capabilities of the existing Lavapipe software renderer.
In addition, gfxstream promises superior performance compared to VirGL, another graphics virtualization technology previously explored by Google, which employs a less efficient translation method. This advancement is particularly important for Google’s ongoing efforts to expand Android’s functionality on PCs, as it allows for the use of powerful Linux-based development tools that are otherwise unavailable on Android.
