Linux Mint is set to unveil two new releases by the end of 2025, marking an exciting period for its community. Following the recent release of Linux Mint 22.2, developers are gearing up for both the Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 and Mint 22.3.
LMDE 7, codenamed "Gigi," is under development and will be based on Debian Linux 13, known as "Trixie". This edition serves as a safety net for Linux Mint in case Ubuntu—its primary base—ever fails. Despite having a history of tensions with Canonical, the parent company of Ubuntu, Linux Mint continues to innovate independently. Notably, LMDE 7 will remove support for 32-bit architectures, focusing exclusively on 64-bit builds.
The LMDE 7 beta is anticipated to be released later this September, with features from Mint 22.2 included along with enhanced OEM installation support, which allows vendors to pre-install LMDE on devices more efficiently.
Additionally, Mint 22.3 is scheduled to launch in December 2025 with improvements aimed at enhancing the user experience. They plan to introduce a new application menu, enhanced system tray functionality, and better support for Wayland, addressing feedback from the community regarding the Mint-Y theme and overall desk aesthetic.
Moreover, Mint 22.3 is set to feature an updated version of the Cinnamon desktop environment, expected to be Cinnamon 6.6, improving the interface’s usability and modernizing the desktop experience.
