After an extensive development period, Glen MacArthur has released version 25 of AV Linux, a Linux distribution tailored for content creators like musicians and video producers. This version introduces a new desktop environment, Moksha, alongside the existing Enlightenment desktop.
The announcement states that the distribution is now offered in two versions: the traditional AV Linux, which utilizes the Enlightenment desktop, and the new variant featuring the Moksha desktop from the Bodhi Linux project, referred to as MX Moksha 25 (MXM). While AV Linux is designed to be streamlined yet fully functional for production, MX Moksha includes AVL’s utility structure but with a minimal app base, allowing for easier customization by users.
Both versions are based on the recently released MX Linux 25, which runs on Debian 13 (Trixie). AV Linux continues to feature Liquorix kernels, designed to enhance performance by reducing latency, thus improving response times for music and video workflows.
Additional updates in AV Linux 25 include enhancements to the Thunar file manager, which now offers improved file actions and core functions. This includes functionality to directly launch virtual machines with Quickemu and download videos using yt-dlp. The Wine4VST utility has also been created, allowing Windows VST plug-ins to operate within AVL and MXM environments. A setup wizard now facilitates initial configuration upon the first startup after installation.
Users can download the current ISOs for both AV Linux 25 and MX Moksha 25 from MacArthur’s website. The project had been relatively quiet since the release of AV Linux 23.1, which marked a transition to MX Linux 23 and Debian 12, but the latest release signifies a significant step forward for the platform, reaffirming its commitment to multimedia creators.
