After a month-long beta phase, Firefox 142 is officially available for download ahead of its launch on August 19, 2025. This latest version brings several enhancements aimed at improving user experience and website compatibility.
One of the key features in Firefox 142 is the introduction of a flexible exception list for the Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) Strict mode. This update resolves issues with broken site functionalities caused by tracker blocking. Additionally, the release allows the removal of extensions from the sidebar by right-clicking the extension icon and selecting "Remove from Sidebar." Users will also notice improved scrolling speeds in the Bookmarks dialog, ensuring it doesn’t extend beyond its designated area. The drag-and-drop support for blob images has been enhanced as well.
Firefox 142 also refines the search results in the address bar by minimizing the chances of duplicating results from browsing history. It further upgrades the Netmonitor feature, allowing for better visibility of request headers, cookies, and parameters, even if the request is not fully completed.
For web developers, Firefox 142 introduces support for the wllama API for extensions. This allows developers to integrate local language model capabilities directly into their add-ons. Furthermore, it offers support for the URLPattern API, enabling standardized pattern matching for URLs, and the Prioritized Task Scheduling API, which aids in managing task priorities.
Additional updates include the ability for developers to accurately retrieve selected text ranges across shadow DOM boundaries using the Selection.getComposedRanges() API, along with a new setting in the Debugger providing control over the visibility of the debugger overlay during paused script execution.
Mozilla is set to officially unveil Firefox 142 alongside the Firefox ESR releases tomorrow. Until then, users can download the source code and binaries for various system architectures from Mozilla’s FTP server.
