Recently, I was reminded of the Flexbar crowdfunding campaign after learning about the Linux 6.15 kernel’s support for the Touch Bar in MacBooks. Flexbar is a USB-powered device that mimics Apple’s discontinued Touch Bar, designed to work with various devices including laptops, PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
Initially, I was skeptical about the campaign. The Hong Kong-based team, ENIAC, set a remarkably low funding goal of $2,000 to produce and support the device, which raised some red flags considering the costs associated with materials, manufacturing, and software development.
Despite my doubts, ENIAC has successfully built and shipped the Flexbar, and they have continuously improved the user experience with multiple updates to the software and firmware. Notably, they have recently added Linux support, which, while not promised initially, demonstrates their commitment to expanding usability for different operating systems.
While I cannot personally vouch for the Linux functionality since I don’t own a Flexbar, the configuration software is available for Linux as an AppImage and can update the device’s firmware. Although the community hub for sharing presets lacks Linux-specific resources at this stage, it remains an early phase for the device.
For those who missed the crowdfunding opportunity, ENIAC now sells the Flexbar directly, though it comes at a higher price compared to similar options like the Elgato Stream Deck. Reports from backers indicate varying experiences with build quality and software support.
In summary, while initial skepticism about the campaign was warranted, ENIAC has demonstrated capability in delivering the product and adding features. Perhaps there is room for optimism in innovative projects like the Flexbar after all.
