GIMP 3.0.6 has been released as the latest stable version of the open-source image editing software compatible with GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows. This release follows GIMP 3.0.4 and includes various significant updates, particularly in improving Photoshop brush support and enhancing user interface features.
One notable addition is a new toggle in the Brushes and Fonts dialogs, allowing brush and font previews to align with the selected color theme. The update also introduces an alpha channel for certain transforms and during filter merges. The Palette import feature receives upgrades as well, enabling alpha values for image palette imports and better support for importing Lab and CMYK ACB palettes. Users will find that the import dialog now provides clearer guidance on supported palette formats while filtering out irrelevant files.
GIMP 3.0.6 refines filter action sensitivity, ensuring they become insensitive when needed, especially for non-destructive filters. When a palette entry is deleted, the next entry is automatically selected. Additionally, filters can now be applied to channels non-destructively, which enhances the editing workflow.
SVG exports are also improved, including the styling of the palette grid and the functionality of the search pop-up, which no longer appears without an image. Various adjustments have been made to the grid and list views, allowing for zooming via gestures.
In this release, features like the undo step for Lock Content, image resizing to layers regardless of selection, and better handling of layer masks have been addressed. The Text tool changes now ensure that the default color only updates upon user confirmation, and the Foreground Selection tool is more intuitive, not creating selections unless strokes are made.
The Print plug-in has been enhanced for fine-tuning print settings in Flatpak and Snap packages, while support for YCbCr decomposed images has been improved. Notably, the release enhances the importing and exporting of various image formats, including JPEG 2000, TIFF, DDS, SVG, and DICOM. Additionally, C Source and HTML exports can now run non-interactively.
User interface adjustments include a refined zoom step algorithm for data previews, consistent naming patterns, and various CSS improvements for better styling. The AppImage bundle is built on Debian 13 "Trixie," and the build scripts have been made POSIX-compliant for portability across platforms.
GIMP 3.0.6 is available for download as an AppImage universal binary, catering to virtually any GNU/Linux distribution. Alternatively, users can install it as a Flatpak application from Flathub or download the source tarball for manual compilation.
