GNOME 49.1 Desktop Launches: Explore the Latest Improvements and Bug Fixes

The GNOME Project has announced the release of GNOME 49.1, which serves as the first point release in the GNOME 49 “Brescia” desktop environment series. This update brings a host of improvements and bug fixes across various components.

Key enhancements in GNOME 49.1 include improved accessibility in the screenshot user interface, better Hindi Bolnagri input for the on-screen keyboard, updated accessibility icons on the login screen, and a more consistent warning styling in dialogs. The keyboard indicator for modifier-only layout switches has been updated, and multi-touch handling on X11 has seen improvements.

Several bugs have been addressed in this release, including a significant image corruption issue affecting certain NVIDIA GPUs when using GNOME Remote Desktop, problems with the gnome-session failing to clean up orphaned processes, and glitches during window resize and move actions. Additional fixes include restoring keyboard focus in Activities Overview for some devices, resolving issues with GTK applications freezing when navigating popover submenus, and addressing maximized windows incorrectly extending under the panel.

Nautilus, GNOME’s file manager, received several fixes to prevent crashes, improve functionality when pasting images, and enhance the handling of drag-and-drop actions in the sidebar. Similarly, the Epiphany web browser introduced improvements to the address bar related to dropdown behaviors and the display of non-Latin characters.

There were also notable updates in GNOME Control Center, with fixes made across various settings panels, and a hotfix issued for GNOME Display Manager to resolve issues causing lockups. The Orca screen reader has gained new navigation capabilities for text objects and better command support.

For more detailed information, users can refer to the release announcement page. This update will soon be available in the stable software repositories of multiple popular GNU/Linux distributions.
