Initially introduced in March, the Linux Terminal app allows for the virtualization of full Linux programs on Android. While the first release only managed command-line applications, the latest update aims to enhance this with support for graphical desktop applications. However, existing Android devices struggle with performance due to reliance on a software renderer called Lavapipe, which utilizes CPU resources for rendering tasks that are typically handled by the GPU more efficiently.
To improve this situation, Google has introduced Gfxstream, a technology that facilitates graphics API calls from a hosted Linux virtual machine directly to the Android device’s GPU for smoother graphics handling. This feature was recently confirmed by users of the Pixel 10, who reported seeing the Gfxstream support option in the Terminal app’s settings.
The Gfxstream capability appears to be exclusive to the Pixel 10, as it has specific overlay files that enable this feature, unlike other Pixel models. Despite this advancement, users have reported that the feature is not yet operating at its full potential, with only a portion of the Vulkan extensions available and some apps performing worse than with the previous software renderer.
While the overall performance and compatibility of Linux apps on Android are still being refined, the introduction of Gfxstream represents a significant step forward.
