Google has transferred the Agent-2-Agent (A2A) protocol to the Linux Foundation, which aims to foster fair competition in the realm of AI communication. Originally unveiled at the Open-Source Summit North America on June 23, 2025, this move marks a significant step in open-source collaboration.
The A2A protocol, designed to enable AI agents to interact efficiently, was initially developed by Google in partnership with multiple industry players, including Atlassian, PayPal, Accenture, and McKinsey. With its new home at the Linux Foundation, the A2A project plans to maintain vendor independence, nurture innovation, and attract ongoing community contributions.
As outlined by the Linux Foundation, support for the A2A protocol has surged, now backed by over a hundred companies, with notable recent endorsements from AWS and Cisco. This protocol complements Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), facilitating secure and platform-independent communication between AI agents. Google had previously highlighted plans to roll out a production-ready version of A2A in 2025.
