Introducing Linux Mint’s Sleek New Lock Screen and Screensaver Design

Linux Mint is currently working on an upgraded lock screen and screensaver for the Cinnamon desktop environment, showcasing a solid improvement in design and functionality. This new screensaver does more than just provide an idle display; it acts as a screen locker and presents essential information at a glance without requiring user authentication. Users will be able to see the battery level, time and date, controls for media playback, and notifications count right from the lock screen.

One of the main reasons for this revamp is to simplify the way screen locking is handled within the Cinnamon desktop. Previously, the locking feature was managed by a separate package called cinnamon-screensaver, which operated independently. Now, integrating it directly into Cinnamon will enhance visual appeal and streamline the overall user experience, making transitions between screens smoother.

Additionally, the new implementation will support Wayland, complementing the current Xorg/X11 setup. Although Linux Mint is not rushing to switch to Wayland entirely, it aims to keep that option available. The refinement also allows developers to simplify the code, moving away from the complexities linked to earlier GNOME versions.

Clement Lefebvre, a key figure in the Linux Mint project, emphasizes the significance of a screensaver that is both visually appealing and reliable in protecting user privacy. The new screen lock/saver will undergo extensive testing for both Xorg and Wayland to ensure it functions perfectly without exposing sensitive information.

For users concerned about their current settings, the next release of Cinnamon will maintain existing configuration options while introducing the new screensaver, ensuring compatibility with the older version. Future releases will fully transition to this updated version.

You can expect the new screensaver to be part of Linux Mint 23 later this year, which will be based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. It will also be available for any Linux distributions that implement the forthcoming Cinnamon release.
