Introducing the FLX1S: A New Linux Phone That’s Mostly a Downgrade from the FLX1

The Furi Labs FLX1S is the latest smartphone offering with a 6.7-inch FHD+ display featuring a 90 Hz refresh rate, powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor. It comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and is currently available for pre-order at $550, with shipping expected in October.

This device stands out for a couple of reasons: it ships with a Linux-based operating system rather than the more common Android and it includes three hardware switches to disable the microphone, camera, and cellular modem for better privacy. However, it is important to note that the FLX1S is, in many aspects, a step down compared to its predecessor, the original FLX1, which launched in 2024.

While the new model is thinner and lighter and features increased RAM, it has a bigger yet lower-resolution display than the original. It has switched from a USB 3.0 Type-C port to a USB 2.0 Type-C port and lacks a headphone jack. Additionally, whereas the FLX1 was IP68 rated for water resistance, the FLX1S no longer carries such a rating.

Here’s a brief comparison of the specifications:

Despite the price and feature adjustments, Furi Labs has decided not to offer the FLX1S as a lower-cost alternative; it’s priced the same as the original FLX1. This choice may reflect economic factors like inflation but leaves some potential customers disappointed given that the new model has several drawbacks.

It’s worth noting that the FLX1S does not utilize a mainline Linux kernel, using instead Halium and Libhybris to enable the device to function with Android drivers, which may turn off some purists in the Linux community. The operating system is named FuriOS, which is based on Mobian, a version of the Debian GNU/Linux specifically designed for mobile devices.
