The KDE Project has released the beta version of the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.4 desktop environment for public testing. This major update introduces a host of new features and enhancements. Among the key updates is a significant revamp of the Spectacle screenshot utility’s user interface, along with support for custom tile layouts that can be tailored for each virtual desktop. The KWin-X11 window manager is also included, known for its ease of use and flexibility.
In addition to the previous updates, KDE Plasma 6.4 allows users to control whether a window displays a title bar and frame directly from the Task Manager context menu. It also offers users the option to completely disable system tray icons from applications lacking internal settings for this feature.
Other notable enhancements include the improved ordering of search results in KRunner, support for various types of color codes, a streamlined portal-based shortcut chooser window, and the ability to initiate updates directly from notifications in Plasma Discover. Users will also be able to apply sound themes with just a double-click.
Additional features aim to enhance usability, such as sending persistent notifications to history, customizing the duration of the “Fade Desktop” transition effect, and introducing a revamped KDE Menu Editor (KMenuEdit). The Plasma System Monitor is now enhanced with a new “Background Services” item to better organize running applications.
The final release of KDE Plasma 6.4 is anticipated on June 17, 2025, with stable tarballs becoming available on June 12 to allow Linux distribution maintainers to implement these updates. Users can begin testing the beta version now through the testing editions of distributions like openSUSE Tumbleweed or KDE neon. However, they are advised not to use this pre-release for production work.
