Kodi 22, codenamed "Piers," is under development and set to introduce significant enhancements for an improved media experience. This upcoming version will feature HDR passthrough support on OpenGL, alongside HDR functionality on Wayland, thanks to the inclusion of the Wayland Color Management protocol.
In addition to HDR improvements, Kodi 22 promises features such as audiobook chapter support, an overhauled Movie Versions/Extras section, a new Blu-ray episode selection menu, and shader support for gaming. It will also add support for Python 3.13 on Windows/Xbox and initial Windows ARM64 desktop compatibility.
For Android users, the update will cater to Android 15 and enhance file-sharing capabilities with other apps. It will also revamp channel management on the home page. On LG webOS, a unified media pipeline will be adopted.
Networking has seen improvements too, with enhanced performance for large SMB directories and better configuration options, along with support for SMB 2.0 devices without SMB 2.1 features.
For Personal Video Recorder (PVR) functionalities, the update introduces a Recently Added Channels section, various new widgets and windows, as well as improvements in recording capabilities and EPG search.
General enhancements in Kodi 22 will boost performance on OpenGL and OpenGLES, optimize memory usage, improve texture rendering, and refine stream selection processes. Moreover, automatic cache cleaning and support for the FFmpeg 7 multimedia framework series will be included.
Further improving user experience, Kodi 22 will enhance support for the OSMC Remote, Pulse-Eight CEC adapters, and Flirc receivers, while addressing numerous bugs for smoother operation.
