Linus Torvalds has officially announced the release of Linux kernel version 6.15, albeit with a slight delay caused by a last-minute bug. The long-awaited update was pushed out nearly two months after the previous version, 6.14.
In an email to the Linux kernel mailing list, Torvalds elaborated on the cause of the delay, revealing that the bug necessitated the deactivation of a new feature. Despite this setback, he noted that the general state of the kernel appeared normal leading up to the release.
Linux 6.15 includes numerous “random small fixes” throughout the codebase, predominantly targeting driver issues. Among the more significant adjustments are bug fixes for bcachefs, as well as enhancements to networking functionalities and memory management. Fortunately, none of these corrections are perceived as particularly troubling.
Torvalds humorously mentioned that the merge window for proposed changes for the upcoming kernel version 6.16 would open as scheduled the following Monday. He acknowledged the proactive nature of certain developers who continued to send pull requests, jokingly comparing their dedication to that of the U.S. Postal Service’s motto: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night" could deter this process—except, perhaps, for the icy storms that occasionally intervene.
