Linux Kernel 6.15 Launch: A Major Milestone for Rust Enthusiasts

Linus Torvalds announced the stable release of the Linux kernel 6.15 on May 25, 2025. The release faced a slight delay due to a last-minute bug, but it ultimately delivered exciting updates for users and developers.

One of the most notable features in this version is the introduction of Rust-based drivers. Specifically, the new Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) driver, named NOVA, supports Nvidia’s next-generation open-source graphics hardware. This development is significant as it marks a shift towards open-source collaboration after years of tension between the Linux community and Nvidia. Torvalds had previously criticized Nvidia for being a difficult partner, but the company has now embraced Linux, recognizing the financial benefits of compatibility with open-source software.

Linux 6.15 also boasts substantial performance improvements, particularly for file operations. The optimization of the exFAT file system allows for much faster file deletion. For instance, an 80GB test file can now be deleted in just 1.6 seconds, a dramatic improvement over previous versions where the same operation took over four minutes.

Additional updates include enhancements to the Btrfs file system, which now supports faster zstd compression and improved direct I/O handling. Networking has seen upgrades as well, introducing a new zero-copy receive mechanism, enabling network packet data to be transferred more efficiently.

The kernel also delivers increased hardware support, including drivers for the Apple Touch Bar and updates for the Samsung Galaxy Book. However, Linux 6.15 officially ends support for older x86 CPUs, particularly those predating Intel Pentium processors, emphasizing the focus on modern hardware.

As development continues, the Linux team is already preparing for future updates. Torvalds noted that the merge window for the next version would remain open regardless of the Memorial Day holiday, hinting at a busy schedule ahead for the kernel developers.

For users interested in exploring the latest features and enhancements, Linux 6.15 is available for download, encouraging enthusiasts to experiment and adapt to these exciting changes.
