After several days of rigorous testing, the Linux Mint team has unveiled the beta version of Linux Mint 22.2, which is now available for public download. Codenamed “Zara,” this upcoming release introduces significant enhancements, including fingerprint authentication, improved compatibility with Wayland, and new accent color support.
The beta version features an HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernel that should bolster hardware support, as well as enhancements via a new Fingwit app for fingerprint authentication that will be available across all supported editions. The app launcher has also undergone a redesign, contributing to a more streamlined user experience.
Notably, Linux Mint 22.2 includes improvements to input methods and keyboard layouts for the Cinnamon edition, ensuring better functionality within Wayland sessions, a feature introduced in prior releases. Users can expect to work with desktop environments such as Cinnamon 6.4.10, Xfce 4.18, and MATE 1.26.
This beta release is built on the robust foundation of Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, featuring the Linux 6.14 kernel series, which enhances support for newer hardware compared to its predecessor, Linux Mint 22.1 “Xia.”
Although the Linux Mint team has formally announced the beta release, they advise users to download it only for testing purposes and not for production environments. The final release is a long-term support version, promising updates and security patches until 2029.
