The upcoming version of the Cinnamon desktop environment for Linux Mint includes significant enhancements to keyboard layout and input method switching. These improvements aim to streamline user experience by integrating IBus input alongside traditional keyboard layouts in a single settings panel.
Previously, users had to manage keyboard layouts and input methods separately, but the new setup will allow clear switching between options like a French keyboard layout and a Japanese Mozc input method from the same interface. This adjustment is designed to help users who frequently switch between different languages and formats.
The upgraded keyboard applet will support both types of input, incorporating all necessary features required by IBus, thus simplifying the process for users. This change will be available on both Xorg and Wayland sessions, covering the standard experience that continues to support X11/Xorg on Linux Mint 22, as well as its experimental Wayland session.
Moreover, the on-screen keyboard (OSK) is undergoing a redesign; it will no longer depend on libcaribou but will be built into Cinnamon natively. This update promises a more visually appealing OSK, alongside enhanced input method and layout switching capabilities.
These developments are currently in progress and are expected to be part of the next major release of Cinnamon, set for inclusion in Linux Mint 22.3, which is anticipated to launch in late 2023 to early 2024.
