Most PC and gaming enthusiasts often focus on frame rates and refresh rates, yet for many users, battery life reigns supreme when selecting a laptop. In a bid to redefine the standards for portable devices, Qualcomm and Microsoft have developed the Snapdragon Elite X chips and Windows-on-Arm, aiming to create laptops with significantly enhanced battery longevity compared to prior models.
Although the Snapdragons X laptops represent a small segment of the market, they’ve seen steady growth in adoption, with reports indicating rising quarterly sales. However, for users who prefer not to use Windows, Linaro and Tuxedo Computers have partnered to create a laptop pre-installed with a complete ARM64 Linux distribution, designed to maximize hardware compatibility with minimal user friction. At a recent event, they showcased a prototype Snapdragon Elite X laptop that operates with a custom Linux distribution running native ARM64 applications.
This prototype demonstrated impressive capabilities, not only booting successfully but also running standard PC games in the FEX-EMU emulator on a USB-C connected monitor while maintaining smooth operation for web browsing and daily tasks on its main screen. Achieving this with a fundamentally different system architecture than the conventional Intel/AMD x86-64 platform is a notable milestone.
The development hasn’t occurred in isolation; it involved collaboration among Qualcomm, various laptop manufacturers such as Lenovo, Dell, Asus, and HP, as well as the Linux community. Tuxedo Computers also deserves recognition for supplying Linaro with high-spec equipment for testing and development. Linaro aims to ensure that mainstream distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora can seamlessly operate on ARM hardware, with indications that Linux kernel 6.15 supports multiple Snapdragon laptops. Canonical is also working on adding native ARM64 support for Ubuntu in upcoming releases. As Windows continues to evolve, users may be increasingly excited to explore new alternatives in the operating system landscape.
