Before the arrival of the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS), updating firmware on Linux was a cumbersome task. Users had to locate updates through complicated web pages and navigate various installation methods. Often, firmware files were bundled in executables that would only function in a Windows environment, posing significant challenges for Linux users.
The situation changed in 2017 when LVFS was introduced, offering a centralized repository that allowed hardware manufacturers to upload and manage firmware updates effectively. Using fwupd
and graphical applications, users can now easily check for and apply firmware updates without hassle.
Recently, LVFS has called on hardware and device manufacturers utilizing its service to help fund its ongoing maintenance and development. Richard Hughes, the project lead, shared a new sustainability plan, outlining a funding proposal to ensure the project’s long-term viability. Currently, hosting costs are covered by The Linux Foundation, and Red Hat finances Hughes’ development time. However, as the service expands, this funding model is becoming less sustainable.
Hughes emphasized that companies benefiting from the LVFS should either provide developers or allocate funds to support its growth, given the significant value they derive from the service.
His sustainability plan introduces a “fair-use” quota system based on sponsorship levels but is designed not to impact the majority of participants. The free “associate” tier allows for 50,000 monthly downloads and 50 uploads, which is sufficient for most of the 140 vendors on LVFS.
The plan also includes a phased approach to gradually implement changes if necessary:
By contributing, companies not only support the LVFS but also align their interests with their commitment to Linux users. Many customers, like myself, make hardware purchasing decisions based on a company’s engagement with the LVFS, recognizing it as a sign of support for Linux platforms.
