The MX Linux team has released version 25.1 of their distribution, marking the first update in the MX Linux 25 "Infinity" series. This version is particularly notable for its introduction of dual-init support, enabling users to choose between systemd and SysVinit as their init systems directly from the live boot menu.
MX Linux 25.1 is built on Debian 13.3 "Trixie" and includes the long-term supported Linux 6.18 LTS kernel on the AHS (Advanced Hardware Support) ISOs, with the standard ISOs featuring Linux 6.12 LTS. Previously, MX Linux 25 required users to select between separate ISOs for systemd and SysVinit, but the new dual-init feature consolidates this into a single set of ISOs.
However, users who have installed MX Linux 25 with either init system will need to perform a fresh install to switch to the other init system in version 25.1. The development team has noted that there is currently an issue with semi-automatic persistence saving when using dual-init mode on a live USB, which defaults to automatic persistence if semi-automatic is configured.
