On November 11, 2025, the maintainers of MX Linux announced the release of version 25, which transitions to the Debian Trixie base. Users now have to make a choice when downloading the ISO file: they can opt for either the modern systemd or the older sysVinit.
The MX Linux developers explained in the version announcement that this separation between systemd and sysVinit was necessary due to current Debian kernels not supporting the previously used systemd-shim packages that allowed both init systems in a single ISO. Consequently, along with the systemd images for the Xfce, Xfce-AHS (Advanced Hardware Support), and Fluxbox desktop environments, sysVinit versions have also been introduced. Released versions feature Xfce 4.20, Fluxbox 1.3.7, and KDE Plasma 6.3.6.
The distribution utilizes the Debian kernel 6.12.48, apart from the Xfce-AHS version which employs the 6.16 “Liquorix” kernels known for their particularly low latencies, beneficial for audio-video applications. Additionally, the developers migrated the Qt-based MX tools to Qt 6, leading to various bug fixes and improved translations. The older update tool has been replaced with a new “mx-updater.”
The installer has seen enhancements, including the ability to replace existing Linux installations using partition information from the fstab for fresh installations while retaining home directories. It now supports zram-swap devices and 64-bit Secure Boot installations, necessitating a signed kernel. Thus, AHS releases with the Liquorix kernel are not compatible with Secure Boot.
New configuration options have been added in the Fluxbox release, and the KDE Plasma version has been updated to integrate new configuration options in Plasma 6.3.6. Although Wayland is the default session, X11 remains available in the session selection dialog. The Xfce version has also received various configuration tweaks. Users will particularly notice revised themes and artwork throughout all versions in this release, with the migration process to the main MX versions clearly explained on a dedicated website.
The last version, MX Linux 23, was released in mid-2023, marking a significant base transition to Debian 12, code-named Bookworm.
