NixOS 24.05 Released: Featuring Linux 6.6 LTS, GNOME 46, KDE Plasma 6, and Lomiri Integration

The independent distribution NixOS, which offers a package set that is compatible with other GNU/Linux distributions and macOS systems, has unveiled its latest major release, NixOS 24.05. This new release, nicknamed “Uakari,” comes six months after NixOS 23.11 “Tapir” and includes support for the new LTS (Long Term Support) kernel series, Linux 6.6 LTS, offering enhanced hardware support compared to the Linux 6.1 LTS kernel in the previous version.

NixOS 24.05 adds support for the newest GNOME and KDE Plasma desktop environments, specifically GNOME 46 and KDE Plasma 6. Additionally, the MATE desktop environment has been upgraded to version 1.28, now available on Wayland via the setting services.xserver.desktopManager.mate.enableWaylandSession.

“This is opt-in for now as it is in an early stage and introduces a new set of Wayfire closures,” the developers stated. “Due to known issues with LightDM, we recommend using SDDM as the display manager. […] To properly support panel plugins built with Wayline (in-process) support, we are introducing the services.xserver.desktopManager.mate.extraPanelApplets option, please use that for installing panel applets.”

This update introduces support for the Lomiri desktop, which is being developed by the UBports Foundation for their Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system. Lomiri operates as a continuation of Unity8, utilizing the Mir 2.x series display server to serve as a Wayland compositor.

Additionally, the NixOS 24.05 release brings several advancements including the implementation of zstd compression for firmware blobs across all supported kernels to enhance decompression rates. This release also introduces the capability to install NixOS without the need for Perl, and it features a stub ELF loader that issues an informative error when users try to execute binaries that are incompatible with NixOS.

For more details, check out the release announcement page. You can download NixOS 24.05 from the official website as Graphical ISO images for Intel/AMD or ARM systems with GNOME and KDE Plasma desktop environments pre-instured, as well as Minimal ISO images without a graphical environment.
