Jolla has launched a pre-order campaign for its new Jolla Phone, branded as an independent, European "Do It Together" Linux phone, crafted entirely by its user community. This device aims to provide a genuine alternative to mainstream smartphones dominated by major tech companies, ensuring privacy and control for its users.
The Jolla Phone is powered by a high-performance Mediatek 5G System on Chip (SoC), equipped with 12GB of RAM, and offers storage options starting from 256GB, extendable to 2TB via a microSDXC card. It features a 6.36-inch FullHD AMOLED display boasting ~390 ppi, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and durable Gorilla Glass. Additionally, users will benefit from a user-replaceable 5,500mAh battery.
In terms of connectivity, the phone supports both 4G and 5G networks, and features dual nano-SIM slots along with a global roaming modem configuration. It comes with Wi-Fi 6 support, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC capabilities, and a camera system that includes a 50MP wide lens, a 13MP ultrawide camera, and a front-facing wide-lens selfie camera. A fingerprint reader is conveniently located on the power key, and the phone also includes a user-customizable back cover and an RGB indicator LED.
A notable feature of the Jolla Phone is its physical Privacy Switch, allowing users to disable the microphone, Bluetooth, Android apps, and other features as needed, reinforcing its commitment to user privacy. The device will be available in three colors: Snow White, Kaamos Black, and The Orange.
Staying true to the design aesthetics of the original Jolla Phone, the latest model operates on Sailfish OS, which supports Android applications. This OS is designed to uphold essential user privacy, promising at least five years of software support without tracking or hidden analytics. Jolla emphasizes that typical Android devices may transmit considerable data back to parent companies even when not in use, a practice absent with Sailfish OS.
The Jolla Phone is currently available for pre-order at a special price of 99 EUR, which will be fully refundable and deducted from the total price of 499 EUR once the campaign reaches its goal of 2000 pre-orders by January 4, 2026. The phone will be produced in Europe, aiming for compatibility with various global cellular networks, particularly facilitating roaming in U.S. carrier networks. The initial sales will focus on markets in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, and Norway.
