QEMU 10.2 Official Release: Introducing Live Update Support and Exciting Enhancements

QEMU 10.2 has been officially released, marking the latest stable version of this open-source machine emulator and virtualization software. This update comes four months after the previous version, QEMU 10.1, and introduces several new features and improvements aimed at enhancing the virtualization experience.

One of the key features in QEMU 10.2 is the introduction of live update support through a new ‘cpr-exec’ migration mode. This mode significantly reduces resource usage during virtual machine updates, allowing for a more efficient and seamless updating process. Additionally, it provides the capability to reuse existing states and connections during updates.

For ARM architectures, the update adds support for a new ‘amd-versal2-virt’ board model and makes significant improvements to several existing board models, including ‘AST2600’, ‘AST2700’, ‘AST1030’, and ‘xlnx-zynqmp’. It also adds support for various CPU features such as FEAT_SCTLR2, FEAT_TCR2, and FEAT_RME_GPC2, among others.

The release improves emulation support for HPPA architectures, including the HP 715/64 workstation and the NCR 53c710 SCSI controller. PowerPC architectures benefit from support for PowerNV11 and PPE42 CPU/machines, along with FADUMP support for pSeries.

RISC-V architectures receive numerous emulation fixes and enhancements, while s390x architectures see performance improvements via irqfd for virtio-pci. Furthermore, LoongArch architectures gain support for MSGINT irqchip in TCG mode and HW Page Table Walk in TCG mode.

QEMU 10.2 also promises enhanced performance due to a transition to io_uring for QEMU’s main loop. Other notable improvements include support for the 9pfs shared file system on FreeBSD hosts, numerous fixes for user-mode emulation, and Replay Protected Memory Block (RPMB) emulation support in the eMMC device model.

The developers have updated their requirements, stating that the minimum supported version of Rust is now 1.83. This version is included in the rustc-web package available in Debian Bookworm, though the mips64el architecture will require Debian Trixie or newer for compatibility. For users on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 LTS, the rust-1.83 package is available, with specific environment variable configurations needed.

For those interested in the full list of changes and enhancements, the release notes can provide further details. Additionally, QEMU 10.2 can be downloaded as a source tarball from the official website for those who prefer to compile it from source.
