Shotcut 25.07 has been released, introducing several new features and improvements for this open-source video editing software available on Linux, macOS, and Windows. This release comes two and a half months after Shotcut 25.05 and includes a range of upgrades aimed at enhancing user experience.
One of the key highlights of Shotcut 25.07 is the introduction of a Speech to Text model downloader, which enhances the functionality of the video editor significantly. Additionally, the update brings a new System Fusion theme, a Whisper.cpp (GGML) model downloader in the Speech to Text dialog, and an Outline video filter that utilizes the input alpha channel. This is particularly useful for rich text or assets with transparent backgrounds.
The release notes specify important usability details, stating that certain filters must be applied in a specific order to work as expected. For instance, when using the Outline filter, it should not be applied after a text filter on a video or image clip; instead, a text clip must be used on an upper track.
Apart from the noteworthy additions, Shotcut 25.07 also allows for more precise control over audio with features like the ability to drag the waveform peak line for adjusting audio gain. Users can now manage Clip Gain/Volume settings under the Settings menu, create edits and trims directly on the Timeline, and utilize a new Soft Focus filter set. The default duration for the Slideshow Generator has been set to 4 hours.
Additional audio enhancements include the introduction of a fader and surround balance to the Balance audio filter for channels greater than 2, support for 4 channels in the Copy Channel audio filter, and the ability to apply multiple Mask: Apply filters. Users can also enable Scrub While Dragging for trimming on the timeline and perform ripple-trimming even when the Ripple option is turned off by holding the Shift key.
Moreover, the update modifies the default export settings for audio bitrates and introduces French (Canadian) and Lithuanian translations, alongside additional audio filter options such as toggle buttons for various channels.
Numerous bug fixes have also been addressed in this release, including issues with converting video formats, ambient audio for specific devices, and functionality errors related to the Mask: Apply feature.
