The Tails developers have recently released two versions: Tails 6.19 and Tails 7.0rc2, the latter being a release candidate for the next major update. The 6.19 version focuses on updating essential components of the operating system, while the 7.0rc2 version introduces some minor improvements alongside a more flexible release timeline.
In Tails 6.19, a significant update includes the Tor browser version 14.5.6 and the Tor client version 0.4.8.17, as well as an updated Thunderbird email client. The team has also resolved a bug that caused irrelevant error messages during the configuration of Tor bridges, aiming to enhance user experience. Users can download Tails 6.19 as an image for USB sticks or as an ISO for DVDs or virtual machines.
Looking forward to Tails 7, which only emerged a few days ago, notable changes include a shift to Debian 13, codenamed "Trixie," and the use of GNOME 48 as the desktop environment. However, some tools in Tails have been replaced, and users might face adjustments, such as accessing administrative privileges through the sudo -i command instead of the now-removed "Root Terminal."
The latest release candidate (rc2) for Tails 7 incorporates minor adjustments compared to its predecessor, including a notification for users running on systems with insufficient RAM (less than the required 3 GB). Additionally, the developers have rebranded the "Root Terminal" as the "Root Console" to facilitate easier access, while also removing the "Places" menu.
Originally, the stable release of Tails 7.0 was planned for October 16, 2025, but that date is now under reconsideration, with September 18 being suggested as a potential alternative. As the team reports a decrease in bugs, the community anticipates these updates with optimism.
