Valve has rolled out a new update for the Steam Client Beta, which includes significant enhancements aimed at improving the experience for Linux users. Previously, users experienced frustratingly slow updates, sometimes taking several minutes to apply. The latest patch reportedly reduces the update installation time to mere seconds, addressing a long-standing issue.
This update comes at a relevant time, as a recent Steam Hardware & Software Survey indicated a rise in Linux usage to 2.69%. However, it also noted a decline in SteamOS, which powers the Steam Deck, dropping to 30.95%, its lowest market share in two years.
In addition to the faster update process for Linux, the beta version introduces several other fixes:
Furthermore, Valve has resolved a bug that caused lag in Vulkan games when the overlay was disabled. There is also a fix in SteamVR for a crash that occurred when exiting VR mode, and adjustments to Big Picture mode to prevent incorrect interpretations of button presses.
To participate in the Steam Client Beta, users can navigate to Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation within Steam, select “Steam Beta Update,” and restart the client.
