Sylva’s Latest Updates: Host-Based Routing and v1.4 for Enhanced Telco Cloud Automation

The Sylva Project, an initiative by the Linux Foundation Europe aimed at advancing an open telco cloud solution, has announced a significant advancement in telco cloud networking with the introduction of Host Based Routing (HBR). This innovative model simplifies the integration of complex network functions and connectivity within data centers.

Accompanying this development is the release of Sylva v1.4, which adds features enhancing modularity, edge security, and lifecycle automation to the platform. The project has seen an increase in industry support, notably with TIM becoming a Premier sponsor, joining General sponsors like Wind River, AMD, and Whitestack.

In cloud-native environments, while managing Kubernetes clusters is largely automated, the data center networks often still rely on manual configurations that can be prone to errors. Telco environments, in particular, require detailed connectivity setups that can become very intricate due to custom-tailored network functions interfacing with legacy systems.

To tackle these issues, Sylva has rolled out HBR, which establishes direct integration between Kubernetes clusters and EVPN/VXLAN network fabrics by utilizing containerized routing agents and BGP. This innovation enables comprehensive automation without needing to alter the physical network configuration after deployment.

HBR was initially developed by Deutsche Telekom and has successfully been in production since 2022, managing over 300 bare metal clusters and supporting critical workloads, including the 5G standalone core. The new capabilities are now being extended across the broader Sylva ecosystem through collaborative projects with Orange and 6WIND.

The Sylva Project now positions HBR as an advanced option for cluster connectivity, offering complete integration with Host Network Operators, compatibility with GitOps, and a flexible architecture for enterprise routing agents. This release facilitates self-service, declarative network connectivity for telco workloads.

Key stakeholders in the project, such as Arpit Joshipura, general manager & senior vice president of networking and edge IoT at the Linux Foundation, and Guillaume Nevicato, technical steering committee co-chair of the Sylva Project, express enthusiasm for the community’s expansion and the anticipated simplification of telco cloud operations. Vuk Gojnić, cluster networking lead at Sylva, highlighted that this solution is set to alleviate deployment complexities and foster vendor-independent network automation.
