The anonymizing Linux distribution Tails has released version 7.5, with a key update being the separation of Thunderbird, the email client, into an additional software package. This change aims to enhance security by keeping the client updated outside of Tails’ main software offerings.
According to the Tails maintainers, the new version includes updated core software packages. Notably, the Tor Browser has been upgraded to version 15.0.7, and the Tor client is now at version 0.4.9.5.
Previously, Thunderbird was included in Tails’ standard installation, but this caused security concerns as the email client quickly became outdated. To mitigate this, Tails 7.5 now requires users to enable "Thunderbird Email Client" and "Additional Software" in the persistent storage settings. Each time Tails boots up, it will reinstall Thunderbird from this persistent storage, ensuring that users always have the latest version. Tails developers noticed that updates to Thunderbird were routinely released shortly after new Tails versions, resulting in known vulnerabilities remaining present in outdated installations.
As a part of this update, Tails will display a dialog called "Thunderbird Migration" after users install the new email client. This change indicates that Thunderbird will not be included as default software in Tails version 7.8, which is set to be released in May 2026.
Tails provides both USB stick installation images and ISO files for users wishing to test the software in virtual machines or burn it to DVDs. These mediums facilitate secure browsing experiences on untrusted machines. Additionally, with the persistent storage feature, users can save their data across multiple sessions.
In February, Tails developers had previously released version 7.4.2 as an emergency update to fix significant kernel vulnerabilities that posed risks of user deanonymization through various attack vectors.
