The One Windows Feature I Can’t Live Without After Switching to Linux

Switching from Windows to Linux is often portrayed as a straightforward endeavor. However, my experience revealed several unexpected challenges along the way.

Initially, I took to heart advice from industry experts who asserted that modern Linux distributions have become much easier to install. I attempted to transition as an exploration of the potential obstacles users might face when migrating from Windows.

Despite the popular notion that anyone familiar with Windows could manage the switch, I found the process to be quite convoluted. From the outset, my primary issue was hardware compatibility; I quickly discovered that Linux generally does not support Arm-based systems. Most of my machines for testing were either Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered or otherwise unsuitable.

After realizing my efforts on two Arm-based devices were futile, I pivoted to Intel-based options. Two Microsoft Surface devices were at my disposal. While the Surface Go 2 barely met Windows 11’s specifications, the Surface Pro 8 still performed admirably with the OS. However, installing Linux on these devices proved difficult due to unique hardware components that required a tailored kernel.

I began the installation journey with Ubuntu Linux, a popular distribution, yet I encountered numerous issues, especially with webcam functionality. Following this obstacle, I tried Zorin OS 18, but faced similar complications when attempting to set up drivers specific to Surface functionality.

Ultimately, it was Fedora 43 that triumphed for smooth installation across both devices, tackling most of the initial compatibility barriers I faced before.

While it was feasible to create bootable USB drives and set up Linux on my former Windows machines, not every feature functioned well. The installation process often required terminal sessions—an intimidating prospect for many users.

Despite these challenges, I found that mainstream software, including cloud-based tools and productivity applications, were relatively easy to install and use on Linux. However, certain features from Windows, like facial recognition through Windows Hello, were sorely missed.

For anyone considering this switch, my experience serves as a cautionary tale: while Linux can be a viable alternative for those willing to invest the time and energy into troubleshooting, it may not be the best choice for casual users. More computer-savvy individuals will likely find it manageable, but it remains a path filled with hurdles that should not be underestimated.
