When the ROG Xbox Ally X was released, it received a mixed reception. While many appreciated the hardware, the software was a significant concern. It runs on a lightweight version of Windows that includes an Xbox full-screen experience designed to enhance handheld gaming. However, this experience did not fully satisfy users. To test if Windows was restricting the device’s potential, some tech creators decided to install a Linux-based operating system called Bazzite.
YouTubers ETA Prime and Cyber Dopamine attempted to install Bazzite on the ROG Xbox Ally X and succeeded with ease. They set out to compare Bazzite’s performance against Windows.
Bazzite is known for its user-friendly interface optimized for controllers, along with offering greater control over hardware settings such as TDP limits, GPU frequency caps, and fan curves. The Bazzite team is also developing features like RGB lighting control.
One notable advantage Bazzite provides is the speed at which the device can wake from sleep. Cyber Dopamine demonstrated that waking the device was almost instantaneous, allowing for a seamless return to gameplay, while Windows takes noticeably longer to wake up.
In his tests, ETA Prime noted that battery performance was comparable between Windows and Bazzite, but he hinted that Bazzite might be slightly more energy-efficient. With low power settings, he achieved up to eight hours of playtime with 2D indie games, two and a half hours with a AAA game running at 17W, and about two hours with a AAA game at 25W.
To assess game performance differences, they tested several AAA titles. Cyber Dopamine found that playing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 at 1080p and 17W yielded 62 FPS on Bazzite, while it dropped to 47 FPS on Windows. Similarly, for Hogwarts Legacy at the same settings, Bazzite produced 62 FPS compared to Windows’ 50 FPS.
The tests suggest that the ROG Xbox Ally X has the potential for enhanced performance beyond what Windows currently provides. While the Xbox full-screen experience does improve the handheld experience compared to other Windows handhelds, it indicates that Microsoft still has work to do.
