Tuxedo Computers has decided not to release a Linux laptop powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processor after all. This decision comes after a lengthy wait, starting from the unveiling of a prototype last June by both Tuxedo and Schenker. Despite early excitement around Snapdragon’s promise to deliver competitive performance in the Arm chip market, significant issues have surfaced.
Tuxedo cited the Snapdragon X1 Elite processor as being less compatible with Linux than anticipated due to unresolved developer challenges. The implications include missing features that are critical for users, such as:
Moreover, many Linux applications currently lack the necessary capabilities for hardware-accelerated video decoding.
Given that potential improvements could take considerable time and that by then the Snapdragon X Elite would already be outdated, Tuxedo is pivoting away from this project. Meanwhile, Qualcomm has introduced a newer Snapdragon X2 Elite chip, which Tuxedo is considering to determine if it could offer a better solution in the future.
For now, those interested in Linux laptops with Arm-based processors may have to explore alternatives from other manufacturers, like those using lower-performance chips from Rockchip or possibly MediaTek’s Kompanio Ultra for a more robust Linux experience.
